The Vice Captain followed as the kido arts master made her way through the small bridge, the infinite well of knowledge still surrounding them. Her voice echoed in the chambers like a never-ending song. The two walked past the suspended area, and entered a corridor, where more file cabinets and shelves were hidden.

Here, the lady shinigami opened her palm, and right there and then, Hyakuji once again saw the familiar crystal. It was a different shard of course, but it also had a certain wrung. As much as he was uncomfortable seeing the other few pieces a few months back, he too, was rather uneasy encountering another piece, albeit not evident in the expression of his face; as he was always the stoic guy who rarely showed any emotions.

For a moment he wondered how much Irisa knew about him, as he recalled she was rather old despite the younger appearance. Certainly, he knew some of his friends were way older than him, but this lady in front of him had witnessed the Shinigami-Quincy War herself. Whether she was with Kojiro, his old self, he could not remember. Strange. He was sure he could recall almost all people from his past, but not Irisa.

Did she actually know him from before? She seemed to know more about him than she looked. They only had been together in a few missions, and had not even interacted that much, really. It was only this day that he had “fully” met her.

He was brought back to reality after some moments of contemplation, at the inquiry whether it was alright with him to store the shard in the Great Archive for quite some time. However, much like Irisa did not trust him in full, he too, had doubts of her personality. Though, the fact that she did not teleport them back to the First Division, at the very office of the Captain Commander, would be a telling sign that she too, was taking a great risk trying to protect him…

“I may agree. If.. you will retrieve it together with me. We shall go back in this place after I’ve collected the shards. And of course, once I fulfilled my lover’s wish, I will hunt for the Hogyoku again. This time, for Soul Society.”

Irisa Ishiwara
Location: Daireishokairō
Status: Alive

After some contemplation, Hyakuji answered, accepting the deal. Just as Irisa expected. From what the Shinigami knew of her Vice-Captain, she assumed that the bargain would resonate with him, it would allow him to retain his personal mission while retaining his duties to the Society at the same time. In a way, she figured it was a deal he could not refuse. Would he really have fought Irisa for the shard?

"I will be able to retrieve this shard from the Daireishokairō alongside you, if you are concerned about my truthfulness," Irisa answered him and gently opened the tray she had chosen for the Hogyoku Shard. She rest the shard there and closed it, sealing it shut. Instead of a piece of the most powerful artifact in existence, a mere lock now rest in her palm, which she pocketed. "I will not join you for the hunt for the rest of the shards, however. That I have chosen to help you today is already a violation of my personal code."

After stating her choice, Irisa snapped her fingers, transporting the two Shinigami back to the coast of the ocean where they stood a minute ago. Nothing had changed in the brief time they had vanished, not that anyone around them was looking for them, anyway. After a breath, the woman folded her hands behind her back and smiled, speaking:

"Aw, c'mon, Hyakuji, lift your chin up a little. No need to act so gloomy when you just got one step closer to saving your girlfriend, you know?"

Unperturbed regardless of what Hyakuji has to say, Irisa stored the Hogyoku in the tray, where possibly thousands of other files and artifacts were hidden from anyone in Soul Society. However she had access to it, the Vice-Captain could only guess. He did not even have the power to go here nor to access the files without the Captain Commander’s approval. In the few times he was able to visit here, none of them were without knowledge of his Captain.

Fortunately, the lady shinigami agreed to allow him to come with her retrieve the shard in the Archives, when the time is right. He still had doubts with the agreement, but it was the most feasible choice as of the moment. As it stands, his decision to not challenge the woman still remained.

Perhaps knowing about the dangers of searching for the powerful artifact, the blonde woman declared she had no intention of accompanying the Vice-Captain look for the others. But even Hyakuji had no plan of taking her with him, thus he replied:

“I do not expect you to accompany me in my quest for the rest of the Hogyoku, Ishiwara-san. I understand the perils you have put yourself just to accommodate me, and for that I am grateful,” bowing in respect to the lady after saying his piece.

It was the truth, in fact, he did not expect the kido arts specialist to help him in this endeavor. For a moment, he was ready to face the consequences of his actions but it seems the petite blonde woman had a different plan.

In another flick of the wrist, the pristine sands and crystal clear blue water were back into view. As if nothing had changed. Hyakuji was keen on this ability, in all the times he lived in Soul Society he knew only Hideki could do this.

Dismissing the woman’s comment on his stoic expression, he diverted her attention to that particular technique, “That kido is familiar, Ishiwara-san. Do you travel to places by means of your memory of it?”

In truth, he knew Hideki’s was of his fullbringer origin, and he wondered if such ability also existed in the kido arts.

Irisa Ishiwara
Location: Daireishokairō
Status: Alive

Disappointingly, Hyakuji did not listen to Irisa's advice about putting on a smile - even when he has just gained the assurance that he will be able to use this Hogyoku shard to rescue his girlfriend. Or, perhaps, he was still too suspicious of her intentions to lower his guard down. Irisa tried to be as honest and friendly as she could with someone who has, legally, nearly committed a crime against Soul Society, so it was disappointing to witness that it still wasn't enough.

Instead, the Vice-Captain inquired about her teleportation, and whether it required her to have memory of the places she was visiting. Irisa giggled and turned to face Hyakuji with a smirk.

"Hehe, that is classified information."

But, as they both hold secret information on one another now, she may as well humor him with an explanation.

"I, of course, do not merely study Kidō, but develop my own spells from my studies of how the art works, like any master of the art. In my studies, I delved into the mechanics of the Senkaimon, its limitations in particular. It requiring a Jigokuchō, lest you have to traverse Dangai and avoid the contraptions and dangers of that dimension... I am sure you are familiar with all of that," Irisa explained, then pulled up her Zanpakutō from behind her back and held it in her palms. "But, they are not insurmountable obstacles, and eventually I figured out a method. My spell allows me to turn my Zanpakutō into an artificial Jigokuchō, which I can tune to any effect I want. I set it to open a gate which, unlike the ordinary Senkaimon, is completely instantaneous, making it appear like teleportation."

She giggled again. "You already know whether a Senkaimon needs to rely on one's memory or not." Irisa then sheathed her weapon back onto her back and wrapped her arms behind her. "Are you really sure you don't want to tell me anything about your girlfriend? Is she treating you well, at least? Is she a good kisser?"

The two shinigami continued to walk the shores as the salt waters ever caressed the powdery white sands gently. The waves caught the lower portion of the Vice Captain’s hakama, but it didn’t get wet. A reminder of his lost humanity. Or more likely so, his true nature given his previous lives.

He knew the perils of chasing after the Hogyoku. He was also aware of the temptation it posed once he completed it: unlimited power. The obstacles for peace just kept growing… powerful arrancars, divided shinigami… threatening fullbringers just like Valentina. No. She wasn’t the threat… if anything, she was a victim to this whole comedy of power struggle.

The period of subconscious overthinking came to a halt when the blonde shinigami answered, reminding him that he asked her a question just to lure her attention away from him…

"Hehe, that is classified information."

And then a few more words of explanation stating that she was experimenting with the foundational principles they both knew. Right after that, she turned to pry on him again.

"...Is she a good kisser?"

“Eh?!?”His cheeks became red as rose. An unexpected reaction, perhaps from one among the most stoic in Soul Society.

“T-that…” a still flustered face, until he turned away from her gaze briefly clearing his throat before meeting her eyes again, “That’s not a proper question to ask a colleague, Ishiwara-san.”

“But if you must know, she is kind… and very considerate,”[ another blush appeared from his cheeks; this time a more welcomed one.

“... She always puts others first. I think... That is the main reason why I love her.” Because love is just too complicated to understand. It could be the reason, it could be another... far too many to mention that one could just be left speechless.

Indescribable. Unfathomable.

Still bemused at the lady’s curiosity, he narrowed his eyes and leaned forward, almost studying her soul in suspicion, “You just said you were foreign to such feelings, why are you so curious about the kiss just now?”

An inch space closer. Any girl might have taken that opportunity by then.

Irisa Ishiwara
Location: Daireishokairō
Status: Alive

Irisa's question immediately left Hyakuji flustered, and the Vice-Captain immediately went on a spirited defense - explaining that it wasn't proper for her to ask such questions and then giving some insight into what his girlfriend was like as a person. Kind, considerate, putting everyone's needs and concerns before her own - a total sweetheart, someone who shares the same noble ideals as him.

Before Irisa could say anything else, however, Hyakuji suddenly approached her close, as if trying to intimidate her, and inquired why exactly she was curious about the kissing quality between them - after all, she was foreign to such feelings herself. And that was true, Irisa was foreign to romance. She still had a reason, however. When Hyakuji stopped mere inches away from her, close enough for anything from a hug to a punch to the nuts, Irisa folded her hands behind her back, struck the most innocent, impish smirk, and answered:

"It was my nuclear option to make you crack a smile for once."

She noticed that his stoic facade warmed a little when thinking about his beloved, expressing the words she tried to describe his feelings with. Irisa would not experience such moments personally, but she has studied her fellow Shinigami for hundreds of years and seen thousands of her students form families after graduation. With so much experience, you can start to figure out what makes these romantics tick.

"And got you to tell me more about your girlfriend than you normally would," Irisa continued and poked Hyakuji with her elbow, playfully. "It's... good. Good to hear that she is treating you well. And that you fight for her... -well, to be clear, as a member of our division, I have to tell you that it's irresponsible and not very fitting of our code. Buut, as an acquaintance to an acquaintance..."

After another smirked, she turned to the seas.

"I believe it's time to return to the Society. For me, at least."

The inappropriate distance did not bug him, and he expected the other shinigami to feel the same. He knew she was not like other women who at the slight chance of meeting eyes with him would have gotten crazy already.

He was right.

Even with an inch-space gap, the lady did not take advantage of him. Instead she gave away her smug look, the same cunning smile painted on her face from the very beginning of this encounter.

And when she pulled away, he too did and cracked a slight chuckle at the lady shinigami’s poke.

“You always have your way, Ishiwara-san,” he commented, while he tousled her blonde hair as a response to her being playful.

A gentle wind blew past them. It should be comforting, or perhaps relieving one way or another. But somehow, it delivered a different message, as if foreboding danger. At least that was how it felt to Hyakuji in that brief moment.

“I can only hope for the best. Darker times are coming. I can somewhat sense something unpleasant is about to happen. I just don’t know the specifics… but my gut is telling me we have to prepare for the worst. Be alert and watchful, Ishiwara-san.”

The Vice-Captain couldn’t decipher how or why he felt it, but it almost felt like certainty. It seemed the threat was on every side, ready to strike whenever. With what little information he had, it could be Virgil or Tendo… or a comeback from demons. Or perhaps Valentina.

“Keep safe,” he shrugged the thought for a while, “...as for me, I still need to roam around and investigate.”

Looks like his plan for vacation with his girlfriend would be put on hold. But it was better to be prepared for the imminent danger lurking in the shadows.
