Katsuaki listened to Hyakuji's description of the death of his past self in silence. Much to the towering exiled Shinigami's surprise, it was Tendo himself who betrayed Kojiro, and slew him by his own hand. Tendo had not mentioned this before. This was new.

"...I see." the Shinigami answered, with slight reservation, then chose to share what he knew of the former Captain's fate. "Tendo was imprisoned alongside the surviving Visored in Soul Society, and was slated to be executed on Sōkyoku Hill for conspiring against Soul Society. On the very last day, however, he and the survivors were freed by a sympathetic Shinigami, and escaped to the World of the Living with Reiatsu-concealing Gigai. They, the Visored, settled here, and many years later, I reconnected with them."

What was the motivation behind Tendo's strike against Kojiro, however... was beyond Katsuaki. If Hyakuji wanted answers for that, he would need to find the unassuming shopkeeper in Tokyo himself, and ask the man what went through his head that day.

"Kojiro!" a voice suddenly rang out. The two Shinigami had approached the massive trunk of the Fortress of Strength and were ready to scale up the wooden rail, when Akira leapt off one of the roofs and gracefully landed before them. "It's me, Akina! It's so good to see you!"

"He, uh..." Katsuaki spoke up. "He prefers the name 'Muimina Hyakuji' today."

"Huh...?" the pink-haired Shinigami muttered, confused, and blinked a few times. Regardless, however, this did not dampen the woman's enthusiasm, and she continued asking as they scaled up the trunk of the massive tree. "So, are you here to become the eighth member of Silver Bullet? We've built a house in the Fortress just for you!"

Tendo must have had a reason why he wasn't spared. Perhaps the former Captain actually bestowed the peace that he wanted by killing him, so he could forget what happened then and live a better life. The succeeding lifetimes were indeed better, if only he had no memory of what he had been before. It was a curse to remember his original life, yet he had to accept and bear with it.

In the distance, a dark-haired tall man watched as the two shinigami climbed the rails attached to the large tree. Altair knew everyone wanted to meet their old friend, but not him. Not his past. He realized for himself how Hyakuji disdained his old tainted identity. And he had no plan meeting him, no. It would be better for them to remain friends as they were now. A part of him regretted telling them about Hyakuji. But it was his duty and loyalty to their organization. Besides, he also secretly hoped Hyakuji would be happy to meet his old friends, until fate revealed the Vice-Captain's ill feelings over his past when he asked him about it after the ceremony two days ago.

When the two death gods finally got inside the tree, the pink haired woman welcomed Kojiro with enthusiasm, introducing herself as Akina. Katsuaki was quick to correct the girl in addressing the long-maned reaper, which had left the woman in a confusion.

"Kanbe-san is right. As I said before, Kojiro died six hundred years ago on the battlefield. I am a different person from who he was, so I would appreciate it if you call me by my own name. Muimina Hyakuji, Vice-Captain of the First Division."

It seemed that the visored had been too confident of their acquaintance with their old friend, that they forgot the sapphire-eyed death god held an honorable position in the Gotei 13. His badge, while under the cover of his blue haori, was evidently protruding its shape, which should be easily recognized by anyone who had a high ranking position. It seemed that the two exiled shinigami were not as perceptive as he thought them to be.

It was then at this point when the pink haired shinigami revealed another surprise, asking him if he was the new member of their organization, further spilling out that they had already prepared a place for him. Hyakuji glanced at the blonde scarred man, asking for clarification with the usual stoic expression on his face.

"You must be mistaken, I only agreed to come here because I have a few questions myself. Some have been answered as Kanbe-san and I made our way here."

He did his best to put up a mask of civility, however, his feelings about his former life betrayed every attempt to act gentle and amiable towards his hosts.

"I also explicitly told him that I no longer want any part in my past. So, if the main reason for your invitation is for me to join whatever band you had formed for yourselves, I decline. But thank you for this mini-reunion. It wasn't nice to see you, but I am glad to know that you are all alive, after all this time."

He was about to leave, but eventually stopped his tracks. In all fairness, both shinigami had been nice to him. Perhaps he could return the favor by hearing them out.

"On second thought, let me ask you this first… How did you find out I was Kojiro? And why was Silver Bullet formed? What is your goal?"

They could be his new allies. Should their goal be aligned with his.

In silence, Katsuaki watched Hyakuji lashing out - knowing how patient and calm Kojiro, and subsequently his reincarnation, was told them both that he was seriously furious. He did not answer anything, and, instead, when the Vice-Captain turned around and walked away, he sighed and continued making his way up the railing. Perhaps he could have informed Akina about Kojiro's arrival in advance, so she could have been more careful with her introduction. She usually is a lot more composed, but emotions get to even the most disciplined people, especially after six hundred years of absence.

"Wait, where are you going?" Akina called out, receiving a blunt answer from Katsuaki as he departed:

"I'm going to go talk with Yasuhiko."

By the time Hyakuji turned around and chose to give their conversation another shot, Akina was left alone, standing with a mix of confusion and worry in her voice. While she, much like the other Visored, had been briefed by Altair about Kojiro's new form and his rise in Soul Society, she did not expect to be rebutted so sharply as soon as she dropped down, nor did she have any context on what Hyakuji was telling her.

"I..." Akina muttered under her breath, then coughed to get herself back together, and straightened up. "I don't think I am allowed to tell you that. Don't worry, though, we aren't spying on you. Just... observing the world."

She sheathed her Zanpakuto and leaned on the rail, continuing:

"I'm... sorry if I made you think we've already planned your induction, Hyakuji. Perhaps I should have been clearer, but it's not what I meant... The fact is, because of how few of us are, and how we all managed to trickle into the World of the Living, we never knew just how many of us survived. Especially not when we constructed this Fortress. So, we built houses for every single Visored, not just the ones we had - just in case they turned up."

Akina pointed to one of the wooden houses suspended above the two Shinigami. "Kojiro's house is this one. I understand that you have... issues with being associated with him, so I understand it if you do not want to visit, but we fashioned it after our best memory of him."

Akina lowered her finger and turned straight to Hyakuji. One question remained, and she answered that question with one of hers.

"If you have already refused to associate with us, then why do you want to know about Silver Bullet?"

Guessing Game

What he told them about not remembering his past was a lie. He vividly recalled them, as if it were yesterday. Hideki had his fair share of reminding him that a new life was a new beginning. Still, his past was like a choker, that constantly bound him to regret. It was only in this lifetime that he was able to move forward and be motivated by the future because he had something to fight for.

Yet, his old identities were too stubborn to hold him back. The first instance was Ayame’s memories, which he eventually subdued when he came to terms with the shinenju-- a part of his old selves. Little did he know that the recovery of these lives would pose another predicament he has yet to conquer.

When he turned around, Katsuaki was no longer with them, and he was left with the pink-haired death god instead. The girl was reluctant of sharing the details how they knew about him... but also became apologetic of her careless remarks earlier, which had softened the Vice-Captain’s mood.

“It’s fine. I have my own mistakes of allowing my feelings about the past to influence my response to both of you. I sincerely apologize, Kimura-san.”

He should not blame them nor extend to them his disdain of his decisions back then. Kojiro willingly volunteered to become a visored, he allowed himself to become a killing machine believing it was the right thing to do.

Akina turned to him the question again, asking about his motivations for his interest in Silver Bullet. For a second he thought about sharing his ambitions but since they were keeping their cards close to their chests, Hyakuji figured he had to do the same. While they acted kind, and he could tell they were sincere, trust has yet to be formed again. So, instead, he posed another query:

“Before I answer your question, please be honest with me. Did you ever regret becoming a visored?”

Their differences in their ideals might eventually turn the tide and make them enemies instead. He had to be careful not to disclose any of his plans until he was certain of their intentions. That they would join together for a shared cause. For the second time around.

(You are an ocean of waves...)

Hyakuji turned softer after the Visored's apology, explaining that he too had something to apologize something for and accepting her explanation. Seeing that she successfully deescalated the situation, Akina sighed and struck a faint smile. She was a lot more comfortable with swinging the blade, rather than talking, and especially not representing all of Silver Bullet to a rather frustrated reincarnation of one of their friends. So, she was glad to hear that she was not doing as terribly as she thought.

After explaining himself, the other Shinigami also used a question to answer a question. Instead of explaining why he was still interested in the other Visored after declaring that he will not join them, he asked whether Akina had ever regretted becoming a Visored.

"I..." she muttered, staring at Hyakuji, then folded her hands and rested them on the railing, looking down at the fields of grass below, surrounding the Fortress of Strength. After giving it some thought, and recalling how Hyakuji spoke right after she dropped down and introduced herself, Akina continued:

"I think I know where you are trying to lead me to. We were tools of Soul Society, disposed of right after we completed our task, and so was Kojiro. Being turned into tools, we had to commit crimes against numerous mortals, and did not know any better on whether it was right or not. This must be what you remember from your past life, and what you're trying to find in me."

Akina sighed again. "I... certainly have thought of how much I missed out by making the choice to join the Visored Project. I never had any qualms with serving Captain Tsukishima, and would have served him to life's end had it not been for the War. I could have found a family, or taught in Shin'ō Academy again. But..."

She turned to stare directly into Hyakuji's eyes. "I can't change the past. No one can. All I can do is... make do with what I have, and try to make the world a better place."

Shatter the forces of evil

To make the world a better place. Wasn’t that his goal ever since? It was the reason why he submitted himself to the experiment… he was promised, along with the others, that they could change the world. For the better. Thus, he clung unto the hope that the curse of a tainted soul was the cure for suffering and bloodshed to end.

Unfortunately, it wasn't...

While he had seen the temporary light when his life ended on the battlefield, it was a false peace; which only dragged his battle scars into another life. And through all those years, his soul kept witnessing that weeping and bloodlust continued to live on, like an incurable disease plaguing the world.

Akina indirectly answered his query, enumerating the reasons why she could have turned down the project, yet had gladly accepted the past and chose to move forward. Yet the mystery remained: what will she do from now on? And would it be similar with the other Visored?

Unlike them, time has severed the stain in his soul. He was a new person with a painful memory of his pasts while his friends had carried their burdens for six centuries long, imprisoned by betrayal and probably by regret. Yet, he knew there wasn't really much difference between them.

As he continued to listen to the visored pink-haired, one thing consumed his mind: should he trust them? If they were still the same person they were, who believed in the same principles Kojiro upheld, he could try.

“To make the world a better place… that vision still remains. I have experienced different lifetimes over the past 600 years. Unlike you all, who survived the purge. When I was born as a human, my remembrance of my past identities was lost in the void. Until I encountered the shinenju who held pieces of all those memories…” Hyakuji turned back from Akina to gaze at the landscape outside. The small patch of grassland surrounding the tree swayed against the cool November breeze.

“There was only regret. On what we have done. Claiming the lives of the people we were supposed to protect… doesn’t sound so ideal to me now. But you are right…” The long-maned reaper faced his old friend again.

“...We can’t change the past. That is why I have decided...to make this world a better place…”

“...by uniting all the spiritual forces. And end the strife that has been devouring our hearts with hatred.”

“Does Silver Bullet strive for the same resolve? Will you join me in this cause?”

(You are an ocean of waves...)

Hyakuji began speaking again, with even more spirit behind his words than before. Pushed by Akina's statement of fighting for what's right, the other Shinigami suddenly announced what that meant to him - uniting all of the forces of the spiritual world, ending the strife between them, and achieving peace without any more genocides and slaughter.

It was a beautiful, yet deceptively simple creed.

"You sound just like Kojiro."

And yet... not everything in this declaration checked out to her. It was, after all, a Vice-Captain who was telling her about the regret of what they had done or called her to establish peace between the Shinigami and the other races of the spiritual world. Not a fellow refugee, or defector, but a Shinigami who has clearly ingratiated himself deeply within the Gotei 13.

"We Visored uniquely realized the failings of Soul Society. We served as the footsoldiers of its greatest crime and were betrayed for it nonetheless, so we have resolved to fix the failings of Soul Society and replace its tyrannical leadership with someone who would turn it into an organization truly accepting of everyone. So, I suppose, our goals align."

However, Akina had something to ask, staring directly at Hyakuji with a slightly more gloomy expression:

"...but why did you become a Vice Captain, Hyakuji? If you remember everything of your past life, then you must also remember who truly was responsible for the destruction of the Quincy. The Captain-Commander, and the Central 46, who would never repent for the crimes they ordered - and to whom you now must serve."

Lullaby of broken dreams

The world is full of people with broken dreams, human beings or souls alike, each one is fighting for something they strongly believed in. They strive, they struggle… and fight. Even if it means crushing another person’s fantasies.

The war that happened six hundred years ago was no different. It was not only a battle for life or survival-- but of principles and ideals each faction wanted to prevail. While victory shone upon Soul Society, thousands of unrealized dreams were shattered in the form of countless bodies lying in the blood-soaked battlefield.

Hyakuji-- rather, Kojiro, remembered all these to this day.

At this point, it was undeniable that he can’t escape the past that kept haunting him. No matter how he insisted, the Visored could not forget the Kojiro he once was...even commenting that his ideals now were something that was shared by his old identity. The shinigami sighed, there was no point in reminding Akina about it.

"I no longer want to resort to violence, Akina…"

Azure eyes turned to the landscape outside once again, looking towards the moonlit horizon, but there was no endless vast land in sight, only dark, shadowed forest seemingly casting a chasm between him and his goals.

"I have someone to protect… and as much as that person hopes, I want to believe that revenge will only result in nothing. It will not bring peace to the souls of the fallen nor end the cycle of hatred… so I decided to rise up. Gain influence and power so I can change Soul Society myself.”

“I will not repeat the same mistakes the Captain-Commander did.”

There was deep conviction in his words. It did not matter if this vision was just an illusion or a false hope... a make-believe anchored on dry mist. Hyakuji was determined to make it a reality.

(You are an ocean of waves...)

Hyakuji gave Akina a passionate response on his motivations - he no longer wanted to resort to violence, and chose to stay a Shinigami in Soul Society because of that reason. Rather than take revenge and make bloodshed for his memories of the crimes of the past, he believed that he could be able to break the cycle of hatred and thus do not repeat the mistakes made by Captain-Commander Katsumoto. Akina watched his passion with her deep azure eyes, then, after a faint nod, answered her peer:

"I understand you, Hyakuji. It would be wrong of us, hypocritical even, to pay with blood for the Captain-Commander and others, especially if those who never had anything to do with it would suffer. However... I was thinking of something else."

After stating that, Akina folded her arms. "Don't you believe that this path is a breach to your integrity? I can tell that you are honest about your dreams, but even then, you still serve under a commander and a society who will cause more suffering. And, indirectly, with each service you make, you aid their goals."

She placed her hand on the rail, staring off. "For the past six hundred years, I have served under various mortals, fighting for justice and peace in disguise," With another hand, the woman tapped on one of her shoulder pads - which, as well as her entire uniform, had been bestowed to her in one of those numerous wars. "Say, for example, over four hundred years ago these islands were embroiled in a gruesome civil war, clan against clan, but a brave and powerful leader united them back to one - and I was there, as one of his retainers, to help establish peace..."

But this wasn't about her exploits. Akina turned her attention back to Hyakuji.

"Mortals despise it if you serve an evil lord, no matter for what reason. Even if they joined him just to save themselves, or because they believe they can change the system from the inside - if that system falls, they will be treated as an accomplice, and judged appropriately. Especially someone as high ranking as you - the second in command of the most important division in all of Gotei 13. Someone that high ranking has to swear an oath to the villainous intent of their lord, after all, and they have to fulfill duties which contribute to that lord's agenda - and so, indirectly, cause suffering no matter the true reason they serve."

Akina struck a stern frown. "So, do you truly believe that serving Gotei 13, the organization which has doomed countless mortals to death, does not make your heroism hollow?"

The Future Glory of Peace

“It will only be a matter of time….” Hyakuji was convinced that his ideals would be realized no matter how impossible it may seem. There was nothing that could change his mind right now; while Akina tried to reason out with him, arguing that serving the evil institution would only breach his integrity, even going further as sharing her own experience, her words only echoed like a clanging cymbal.

His dreams were already set in stone. This was the best resolution he could think of… Wasn’t it? He wasn’t blindly following Haku’s suggestion, nor being deceived by his love for the fullbringer's daughter. This was his own decision...after realizing what he had done in the past. He could not waver, no. This was the only way to atone for their sins without making history repeat itself.

“I cannot fathom my hands being tainted by blood again. The organization does not represent my beliefs nor my principles bear any semblance to what Soul Society desires. I walk this path alone, but I seek companionship from people who share the same future I wanted to achieve...”

Hyakuji met the pink-haired visored’s eyes. Her irises were as deep as blue as his, but it did not reflect the same passion for change he had. She only wanted vengeance, at least that was what he could make out of those windows to her soul. Her judgment seemed to be clouded by hatred, while she wanted to seek peace, she was conflicted and undecided. If it was so, then, now’s the right time to sway her resolve.

“So, if you believe in this peaceful ordeal as well, then let’s walk hand in hand again. Just like how we did before. But this time, we will bring a new hope to this godforsaken land, and fight for what is truly right.”

(You are an ocean of waves...)

Hyakuji did not lack commitment. He remained stalwart in his chosen path no matter what Akina tried to tell him. She did not seek to convince him against his dream, after all, they aligned in their vision - but she felt concern about wishing to reform Soul Society from the inside, concern which Hyakuji did not share.

To him, it was merely a matter of reforming the world through peace, which, seemingly, would justify everything, even working for an organization he did not agree with, and which does not represent his beliefs. When Hyakuji stared into Akina's eyes, Akina stared back at him, but hers did not burn with the same determined fire as his did. She was uncertain with just how righteous Hyakuji's path truly was.

So, once the Vice-Captain requested her aid, she took a pause, then answered:

"We both seek the same end result, but I don't think I can join your cause this way. I have to stay true to myself, and I cannot be on the same side as someone who tolerates Soul Society enough to work for them," Having said her word, the woman then sighed. "If you wish for me to lend a hand, when fighting against evil, then I can provide that aid. And when you create a world of peace and hope, I will aid you and defend that peaceful world as hard as I can. But I'm sure you understand that I have red lines, and so do you."

The woman waved towards the top of the fortress with her hand and continued.

"But if you wish for us Visored to help your cause, then you'd best make your way up to the very top, and meet Yasuhiko."

Motivations

“We both seek the same end result… I cannot be on the same side as someone who tolerates Soul Society enough to work for them.”

“That is true. We might be seeking the same end, yet we have different motivations for doing so. Yours is driven by the past…or rather, your hatred towards the system who betrayed us; mine was born out of a desire to correct my own mistakes… that, and...” the hope to live in peace with his beloved. But that was something he couldn’t tell them. He need not endanger his beloved’s life by exposing her to some people he now barely trusted. Not that he really didn’t trust them, but their ideals were very much different now. If they were so opposed to Hyakuji’s service to the Gotei 13, they might become his enemies sooner or later. There was no telling what could happen in the succeeding minutes.

Hearing further the First Division shinigami’s plan out, Akina suggested that he talk to Yasuhiko instead. Hyakuji remembered Katsuaki went upstairs to speak with him, after expressing his disinterest earlier. Thinking about it, they hadn’t revealed why he was called for here. Surely, they had something they wanted from him? So he spoke, looking up as if talking to the person above,

“I wasn’t the one who called forth this meeting as I recall. I’m sure you have your reasons as to why you were looking for me? Except telling me that you prepared a place for all the visored. Certainly, you’re up to something as to why you’re banding together?”

(Shine, star, up above, so I would not get lost at night...)

"Hatred?"

That was an interesting word to use, which got Akina's attention throughout the rest of Hyakuji's answer, and subsequent question. She listened with her hand on the wooden rail, briefly glancing to the side, before answering:

"That's an odd way to try to rationalize us. If all we felt was hatred, then Katsuaki would not have saved your friend. Nor would we have approached you in peace. If all we saw in Gotei 13 was evil and corruption, then why aid and approach any one of their members at all?"

The woman sighed.

"Much like you wish to amend for your mistakes, so do we. Before we were Visored, we were Captains and Vice-Captains, and so participated in Gotei 13's unjust ways while being blind to the alternatives. As I just told you, we have chosen to find a way to replace Katsumoto and the others, with someone who would turn it into an organization accepting of everyone. That way, something as gruesome as the War against the Quincy could never happen again, and we could once again return to Soul Society, this time to serve hand in hand with an organization which truly defends peace."

Akina glanced slightly to the side, somewhat gloomy in her expression. "Each of us has their own understanding of what would make Gotei 13 just to the world, of course... but we agree on some things. Such as that we need to gather and shelter the rest of our kind, which, to us, includes you." With another sigh, she glared straight at Hyakuji.

"But, to me, you've turned out quite a... hypocrite."

I can become your worst nightmare

While he thought the leader would show up when he said that, the girl in front of him spoke to rebut his argument, even going as far as calling him a hypocrite, which caused him to return his gaze upon her. Now, that was an interesting word to use…. However, Hyakuji remained unfazed by the insult, if that’s how it was supposed to make him feel.

"...and what would you have me do? Abandon my post?” Hyakuji asked in a straightforward manner, his facial expression never changed. It was still stoic and expressionless, You realize it’s not easy for someone to just run away from their duties. No matter what their reasons are.. Pretty sure you can understand me, as you've once had been a Vice Captain?”[/font]

There were a lot of people looking up to him, following his exemplary leadership. Some, aware of his vision, even expressed their support. He just... couldn’t abandon them… could he? or Yukari and their shared vision for the world. That would mean crushing these people’s dreams to dust. And what would he do after? Join this band of exiles? Start over from scratch? No. He would not be dissuaded by Akina’s or any of the visored’s disapproval of his resolve.

Hyakuji sighed, they had clashing beliefs, and they would just keep running in circles if they go on further.
“I guess… there’s no point in discussing this further. We clearly have different means to achieve the same end. Only one is justified, however. The fact that you remain silent about your intentions only proves that I should be wary of you.”

This conversation should be over soon. After all, the night is growing darker... and more dangerous, especially in this forest which had witnessed countless of deaths within its own bosom.

“Don’t worry. I will not say anything about your existence. As a fellow comrade, you have my word,” Hyakuji paused for a while,”However…” this time, he gripped his zanpakuto tightly, "... if you ever cause disturbance to Soul Society’s or this world’s peace...."

"...I will not hesitate to become your worst nightmare.”

(Shine, star, up above, so I would not get lost at night...)

It appears they aren't going to come to an agreement. Hyakuji continued pressing Akina deeper and deeper on what the goals of the Visored were, before finally announcing that he should be wary of them and their intentions. The woman remained stout, listening to the other Shinigami from beginning to end. Much like he was convinced that his path was right, however, so was her - and so, when Hyakuji finished his statement with a clear threat, that he will not hesitate to become their worst nightmare, Akina merely nodded and answered:

"...worse than your death?"

After a second of pause, Akina continued:

"We wouldn't wish to get in the way of a fellow fighter for justice, even a misguided one. You do not have to fear us causing any disturbance to peace."

It was a shame that she could not find a common cause with Hyakuji, and as she spoke, Akina felt a tinge of regret in her heart over how the conversation turned out. Perhaps, if she had not been so foolish and jumped in the conversation between him and Katsuaki, then her comrade could have explained away any of the reincarnated Shinigami's concerns, and instead of leaving today with a bad note, Hyakuji could have become one of their own.

"I hope I did not come here at an unfortunate time..."

A curved light veil on the other side of the wooden construct, behind Hyakuji and Akina a few meters away, dropped, revealing a man dressed in black and with spiky blood-red hair, leaning on the ledge and looking down at the ground.

"Akina, you said you were going to be training today, right?" the man spoke, getting the woman to blink, then sigh and answer:

"Yes, I got distracted, Yasuhiko, as you can see. I'll see you at the top."

The woman briefly nodded and departed - and this time, it was Yasuhiko who spoke to Hyakuji, saying:

"Would you like me to escort you back to Tokyo? We can talk about life on the way."
