The Enemy of My Enemy

The night air was cool and crisp. Most regular humans were nestled into bed and fast asleep. Of course there were the exceptions, the gamers and the insomniacs, to name a few. Most of the living world was quiet though. The city itself never truly slept though. Garbage trucks moved about, picking up the days trash and emptying the huge containers. Their beeps echoed through the still night. The odd jogger ran through the nearby park, a few policemen were chatting in a parking lot.

All of them oblivious to what was happening in the invisible world of the spiritual.

A single group of Quincy dashed through the streets, a blur of white as they maneuvered across the ground and up onto the rooftops. Not too far behind them, a small army of Hollows were in pursuit. They were flying, crawling, and running. All types of the creatures. Some howled, others groaned. Their stampede caused the ground to shake. The jogger stumbled a bit. The two police officers leaned on their cars for support. Maybe just an earthquake they thought.

The sky briefly lit up as a few bright blue arrows of reiatsu strayed from their intended targets. Almost like accidental flares, they bathed the area in blue/white light.

The Quincy were getting nervous. They were mere soldats on their first mission. They didn't realize the kind of effect Hollow bait really had.

The Hollows chased them down into a dark alleyway. They would be trapped soon unless help came...

Several blurs ran across the city skyline, hopping from street, to rooftop, then back to street again. The Quincy squad was a handful, and their number, combined with the tension of the chase, meant that they could hardly notice someone dressed exactly as one of their own slipping in between their ranks.

Their uniform was the same, after all. A standard issue Soldat uniform with white tights underneath and a brown jumper on it. This person did not open fire when the rest of the Quincies released their desperate shots at the Hollows on their tail. Hopping past a few balconies and spinning on a street light pole, she watched the brilliant lights fly far to the sky, briefly admiring the shower of blue which rolled across the sky, before continuing after her peers.

Eventually, their flight from the Hollow horde had to come to an end, as whoever in the Soldat squad was responsible for navigation mada a fateful mistake, and led them to a dark alleyway.

The mysterious tag-along Soldat ran to the narrow street after her peers, clutching her hands in worry and glancing from one side to another.

"There's-there's no way out!" she called out after running up to a door leading to a nearby warehouse, lightly pulling the door, and seeing that it was locked. "What do we do?!"

He had felt the release of the Hollow bait but the blue arrows that streaked across the sky confirmed it for him. Quincy. They must be out on a hunt, not unlike him actually. He smirked at the thought of the both of them sharing such a commonality. It was odd though, he hadn't seen many Quincy out in the world since his initial capture some 500 or so years ago. He had heard rumors that the Shinigami wiped them all out. He wondered if these Quincy were new recruits. That would mean they were building up their forces again.

How interesting.

"Well, I guess you don't need to worry about that anymore."

Asura grinned down at what was left of the shinigami, laying in a pool of their own blood. He then looked back in the direction the arrow shots came from.

"The night's still young after all."

He disappeared from where he was standing and reappeared up above, jumping from rooftop to rooftop. The sleeves and flaps of his robe fluttering as he glided across the sky. Quickly he made his way to the alleyway the group had found themselves trapped in. Asura landed on the top of a light pole situated between the oncoming Hollows and the group of Quincy. He looked at the group and grinned.

"You all need a hand?"

Then he waved the severed arm of the Shinigami back and forth mockingly.

"Can-can we call for help...?" one of the Quincy soldats mumbled under his breath as he watched the approaching Hollow horde, while another drew his bow and started scanning their vicinity, gushing out:

"Even if we do get someone to come here, they're not going to show up in the blink of an eye! We have to-"

In the blink of an eye, help suddenly showed up, landing atop a dimly shining lamp post in between the Quincy soldats and the Hollow horde. Although, it was not the type of help which the Quincies might have anticipated. A mysterious man with a tattooed face and a wicked smile, one who punctuated his supposedly innocent offer to "lend a hand" by actually throwing around a decapitated hand.

The appearance of the mysterious man got the Hollows behind him to stop in their tracks, but it did not make the situation even less intimidating. Even Val, masquerading among the ranks of the Quincy, briefly clutched her weapon tighter, before the usual confidence kicked in yet again.

"I-I'm scared of him..." she whispered to one of the Quincies, striking as innocent and sugary of a voice as she could - and it swayed him. The Soldat raised his Quincy Bow and yelled, still stammering:

"Who are you?! We-we-we'll shoot...!"

He tossed the severed arm behind him as one of the low ranking Quincy yelled out, asking for his name and threatening to shoot. Asura was going to reply but then he sensed something. It was hard to notice, what with the hollow bait and the spiritual energy of the nearby Hollow horde. The shinigami/hollow hybrid narrowed his eyes. It would have completely slipped by him if he wasn't focusing on the Quincy that called out to him.

Standing beside that Quincy was... well, not a Quincy. They had the taint of a Hollow upon them and their aura read very similar to his. It was almost unnoticeable, unless you were familiar with it... as most Hollows were. The Quincy in the group were too inexperienced to tell it apart, but not him.

"This night just gets more and more interesting..."

Asura pointed to the girl, ignoring the other Quincy who had called out to him.

"Why do you carry the aura of a Hollow?"

Almost as if on cue, one of the Hollows in the horde got impatient and charged forward. Asura sneered and waved his hand. Suddenly the Hollow stumbled and fell. Blood sprayed out from a fresh slash wound across it's neck. The white robed Asura stood up on the lamp post and pointed at the Hollows. His red eyes seemed to glow in the dim light.

"Stay."

Practically in sync, the group of Hollows took a step back and snarled, but didn't move further. He turned back to the group of Quincy and the not-Quincy.

"As I was saying..."

He looked right at the girl.

"Explain."

The man - whether he was Fullbringer, Arrancar, or anything else which could give off an energy signature like that - was more observant than Val had anticipated. Instead of paying attention to the unfounded threats of a rookie, he raised attention to the supposedly helpless and innocent girl standing next to him - pointing out the aura of a Hollow that she had.

The other Quincies turned their faces to her - they all were just beginners, but by focusing hard enough, even they could tell that something about her energy was different from the rest. Val's eyes shifted from side to side, concerned. Suddenly, the woman flew forth, speeding into the man faster than the eye could track - her Reiatsu signature briefly jumped far, far higher than it normally appeared to be, before receding once again.

Val pushed the man through a rift gate which opened behind his back, spitting them out atop a roof a hundred meters away.

"Do you want to play a little game?" she called out as she grabbed the man by the collar, staring with enthused eyes and a grin. "These Quincy children have no idea what cruel world they have gotten into... so let's play with them, help them and buff them up a bit. Let them think they're heroes, protagonists of a perfect little show..."

The rift gate lightly hummed behind them, waiting for them to return back to the dilapidated, dark alleyway.

One second the girl was standing beside her "comrades" and the next she had pushed him through a portal and was trying to coerce him into playing along with her game. Asura's usual cocky grin was twisted and frozen into a look of surprise. He had made a mistake and vastly underestimated the danger of the situation. That brief spike of Reiatsu was enough to confirm that the distance between his power and hers was far too great. Between them was a great chasm, a divide too wide and deep to cross. As he was now, he wouldn't stand a chance against her. This girl was truly a monster.

Now, Asura was generally cocky yes, but he was also clever. He had to be, after all he was just a parasite. He only gained substantial power because of his current host. The irony of a worm decrying others for being weak was not lost on him, but when you are weak for so long and looked down on... the moment you get an ounce of power, it is intoxicating. Power is a drug like no other.

He stared back at the girl with the wild eyes, almost putting his own crimson orbs to shame. She was by far the most interesting character he had met since leaving Hueco Mundo. He wanted to know more.

"Alright... I'll play along."

Not like he had a choice.

"Lead the way."

Whoever, whatever this man was, they changed their tune as soon as Val forced herself at him, holding him by the collar and staring at him with enthused eyes. He even dropped the question he had, at least for the moment - instead, he went along with her offer, and told her to lead the way.

Val giggled and jumped back, tapping her foot and speaking:

"Grrreat! You're the boss of these Hollows, aren't you? So, that's ya job!" Since he was able to order them around, he certainly was not a Fullbringer. Arrancar, maybe? She'll have to kill him eventually... but oh well, eventually is far enough away.

With that comment dropped, Val jumped back first into the rift gate - where, without them both being present, a battle had broken out, the Hollows attacked the unfortunate Quincies and sent the entire alleyway into chaos. The girl landed on the top of the lamp post and immediately dove down to the battle - from behind, she grabbed the same Quincy from before and pulled him away from the claws of an attacking Hollow.

"H-huh?" the Soldat called out. "You're... that girl who that scary man said is like a Hollow..."

"That doesn't matter now," Val shot back at him - and suddenly kissed him on the cheek, the boy's cheeks immediately turning red from the surprising touch. "Be a hero for me now, okay?" Little did he know that the kiss was actually a Reishi transfer - a portion of Val's full strength was now flowing into him to empower him beyond anything he's ever experienced.

As he said he would, he followed her lead and returned to the alleyway, but remained out of sight. Mostly. He stood atop one of the buildings, balancing on the ledge just overlooking the dimly light corridor. The moonlight was the only thing that illuminated him. He watched as she played and toyed with the Quincy. He respected the nature of this game. He too liked to tease his prey.

The Quincy were getting brave due to the power boost they got from the girl, even if they were unaware of the reishi transfer. They fought back, causing the oncoming horde to falter. Their morale boosted, the Quincy started to push the Hollows back. Asura yawned. His short attention span was already growing thin.

He squatted, resting his arms on his knees as he peered down into the alleyway. It lit up a neon blue with every reishi arrow fired by the Quincy. Asura followed the fight closely, his red eyes shifting left, then right, left again.

The hybrid Hollow waited for the right moment. A moment of overconfidence, a missed shot, a slow dodge, anything really. Then it happened. One of the Hollows charged the Quincy. The soldat fired their arrow but missed and in their hesitation or perhaps fear, did not fire a follow up shot. They paused as the Hollow was about to slash right through them with large black claws.

But it didn't. Instead a geyser of red blood sprayed out from the Hollow's neck and it dropped dead at the Quincy's feet. The soldier gathered his wits once more and charged with his comrades. The ability Asura used belonged to his host. It was the shinigami's zanpakuto Shikai power called "Cleave." It allowed his sword to cut things that were very far away as if they were within melee distance. As long as he had line of sight anyway. The blade could only cut in a straight line, he couldn't slash from any angle. The same goes for Asura, but instead of a zanpakuto, he uses his sharp nails.

Asura blew a raspberry into the cold air. He never thought he'd be helping Quincy. Killing Hollows was one thing, it was to be expected. The weak perish and the strong survive. That was how it was in their world, but to help the Quincy who only lived to exterminate all Hollows?

Unfortunately, as long as that girl was there... he'd have to play nice. Unless an opening presented itself.

She was going to have to apologize when she got home. Yael was not going to know anything about what happened, and might get a bit confused, but Val resolved to kiss him twice as soon as she comes home. It was supposed to be just innocent child's play, not micro-cheating.

The Quincy she kissed was left dizzy from the surprising touch, but went on to slay the Hollows just as ordered - and, much to his surprise, his arrows powered through them with ease, smashing the corrupted souls in half and leaving them dissipating into the wind. His peers found themselves surprisingly invigorated as well, though not as much.

One of them, still not fully aware of the extent of their abilities, missed an arrow shot and got knocked back by a Hollow, cowering at the sight of the descending claws. Suddenly, however, a burst of blood sprayed from the Hollow's neck and it collapsed to the ground, changing the terror in the Quincy's face to confusion.

"Uh, um... Let's keep going!" he called out, waving his hand to call another hail of arrows.

"Isn't it pretty?" Val suddenly called out, speaking behind Asura - she had only now stopped behind him, but stood and spoke as if she were there all along. Her red cape, resting on top of the shoulders of her Soldat uniform, was fluttering in the wind, and her eyes were staring down at the alleyway.

"These Quincy are still nothing in the pecking order of our world, but we fulfilled their dreams today. It's funny to us, but it will define their view of the world forever."

She glanced to Asura.

"How about you, Hollow? Do you dream?"

Asura continued watching the Quincy group as they battled the diminishing horde of Hollows. He maintained a stoic expression even when the girl suddenly appeared beside him and started speaking. Her abrupt appearance didn't quite startle him but it did come out of nowhere and that gave him cause for concern, but he didn't want to give her the satisfaction of seeing him flustered or uneasy.

He spoke plainly but with a slight bit of passive aggressiveness.

"You're giving them false hope. Those runts down there will come away from this thinking they can take on the world. They'll go out hunting again and their night will end much differently."

Asura stood up and crossed his arms. The last few Hollows were starting to realize they were the last and deciding on if they should run or fight. He knew they'd stay, but part of him... a tiny little part of him kept hidden... hoped they would run.

"My dreams? You still haven't answered my question, girl."

He hadn't forgotten. He was just playing nice to appease her and he didn't feel like giving her anything else so long as he was being coerced into making these little archers feel better about their meager existence. Hollows ate the weak. The notion of lifting others up was foreign to him. Where he came from it was survival of the strongest. The weak were culled. It was somewhat of a mercy really. A life of being constantly on guard and watching your back was hard.

That's why he wanted more power. He wanted to get strong enough that no one would cause him that kind of worry. The same kind of worry that this girl gave him. He was constantly on guard when she was near. He felt like he could feel the edge of her scythe against his neck at all times.

"What exactly are you?"

The Hollow did not answer her. Before Val received any information out of him, she had to explain herself. What is she?

He may not have wanted to convey any fear, but the way that question was formulated told Val almost immediately that there was some concern behind it. You do not ask any ordinary person on the street - what are they? Val's cloak fluttered around her, now cloaking her entirely and hiding any of her white Quincy uniform underneath.

"Who am I..?"

Before she could answer him directly, she diverted her eyes to the alleyway below. "You are correct. Without any guidance, any of their dreams will end as futile dreams. Without a revolution, everyone will one day meet the harsh reality of this world. Today, we gave them taste of this mythical world of dreams, but tomorrow will be different, and millions of their identical peers never received a guardian for a day like us, they will never experience what it feels like to truly be free."

Val turned her focus back to the Hollow. "The reality itself is at fault, conspiring to kill all of our dreams and turn us into dust. My name is RosΓ©. I've sworn it as my life goal to topple this reality, and make everyone's dreams come true."

Once again, she glanced back to the alleyway. "You should probably let your Hollows flee. Or let the last of them die, I don't care. It will imbalance the worlds all the same."

OST: Will It Ever Be The Same

He listened to the girl in the red hooded cloak, but she wasn't making any sense to him or at least he didn't understand what she was saying. Maybe it was over his head. After all, he was a rather simple creature with simple desires. He didn't care about the world or the others in it. Well, that wasn't entirely true. If this reality were to end tomorrow, he would care but only because he lives in said reality. Of course he wouldn't want it to end. He didn't want to die.

She continued on as Asura watched the fight below. It was nearing its conclusion. He raised his hand, opened it with his palm facing the last Hollow left and then closed it swiftly. The Hollow's neck was suddenly slashed open and its blood sprayed everywhere until he slumped into the pavement and eventually dissipated.

The Quincy below were left standing by themselves, staring at one another almost in disbelief about what actually happened.

He turned back to face the girl in all red, an annoyed look on his face.

"They aren't mine. They're just weak and I control them through fear, just like you control anyone weaker than you. Like you control me right now though I'm loathe to admit it."

He sucked in a breath through his teeth, clearly agitated by now.

"I also didn't ask your name. I could give a damn what you call yourself. I asked you what you are. What kind of mortal has a Hollow taint like that?"

"I know what you asked me."

The Shinigami-like Hollow harshly asserted that he had no control over his kin, merely the power of fear - much like she, according to him, had the same power over him. With a faint scoff, Val glanced to the side.

Force, terror, hierarchy. Those were indeed a feature of this sad world they cannot run away. One day, they will free themselves from such shackles, much like they will free themselves from the rest of reality. The woman took a pause, looking down at her hand in comtemplation - she could feel that the man was getting agitated, but she decided to pressure him just a little bit further.

"I suppose you haven't lived in this world for long enough to know what I am. Will I have to introduce you to the telegraph and penicillin as well?" Val shot back at the man, briefly snickering under her breath, before rolling her eyes and glancing to the distance, to the city skyline.

"We call ourselves Fullbringers, and we're the resulting waste of your million year long spiritual war. When the Shinigami are careless and can't police all of the Hollows plaguing the world, and when the Hollows terrorize innocent mortals, people like me are born. Your kind leaves an imprint on us, and as a result, we have access to powers much like yours."

Val snapped her fingers, pulling on the soul in the air by her fingertips to ignite it, and cast a thin blue flame rising from her thumb.

"Nobody cares for the waste, so, we don't belong to anyone. So, we're free, and we'll bring freedom to everyone else."

"Full...bringers..."

He listened to the rest of her explanation, trying his best to ignore the telegraph and penicillin comment. Not like he could do anything about it anyway, but that fact didn't help any.

"So you're an aberration, kind of like me."

Asura smirked.

"I've always been different too. This form you see is just the host I've latched onto, a shinigami's body. You might call me a parasite, but I'm the only one like this I've ever come across and I've been around for a long long time."

Telling the girl all of this wouldn't really change his situation. It wasn't some key piece of information that she would need to defeat him. She could do that without knowing what he really was. If anything, he hoped that little bit of info piqued her curiosity and that it would prevent her from killing him in the immediate future.

He squatted once more on the ledge of the building. The Quincy below were still lingering, maybe trying to make heads or tails of what had actually happened. He went back and forth in his mind on whether to kill them or not. The girl seemed to take a liking to the runts. If he were to dispatch them now it would surely spell his end. Maybe he would follow them if he survived this encounter and take them out another time.

The thought made him smirk wider. He was about to say something else when a roar cut through the air. Suddenly the spiritual pressure in the immediate area ramped up. He could barely keep himself upright, let alone try to stand. Asura looked up into the sky to see a Hollow emerging from a garganta portal. It was easily 9ft tall and exerted monstrous energy.

He looked at the girl.

"It's a Vasto Lorde... we're dead."
