Across the entire planet, across dimensions, phenomena never seen before are taking place, gathering the attention of billions of mortals and souls alike. Above cities, across entire cities, enormously long cracks have formed, breaking through as if the sky was glass, extending for miles and shining in bright light. The power that pulses behind them is enormous, and those familiar with the spiritual world could tell that it was Shinigami Reiatsu.

Those cracks led to no other than Soul Society. The barrier that separated it and the World of the Living was starting to crumble - or, at least, it suffered such massive damage that it appeared to be actually close to breaking apart. Nobody wanted that, not even those who did not know about what effects a collapse of the separation of worlds could lead to.

On Earth, it was impossible to hide from the news. For the first time as long as anyone could remember, it was not just Shinigami, Quincies, Fullbringers and others who could see what was going on - the veil of ignorance protecting the billions of average people living across the planet ultimately failed, and so they took to the streets as well, watching the phenomenon, discussing, worrying and cowering in fear. One after another, the news stations across the planet switched to emergency broadcasting of the phenomenon, as soon it was not confirmed that it was not mass hysteria.

Those able to sense Reiatsu could notice much more. Not just the Shinigami Reiatsu coming from the cracks, but also the enormous pressure coming from them. It was impossible to get close to one of them - the sheer pressure would zap or flick away anyone trying to touch it.

An unbelievably powerful source of energy was pulsating in Japan, and even someone standing on the other side of the planet could tell that there was something ominous in that direction. Was it a Shinigami, a Hollow, a Demon, or maybe even a Fullbringer or Quincy? It did not feel like any of those options...

Cracks were opening in the skies of Soul Society as well, and from the point of view of the Shinigami, it was the numerous different energies of Earth inhabitants that were emanating from them. Fullbringers, Quincies... and a really, really powerful something that had just appeared and did something on the other side.

What could this be? Are we witnessing the appearance of a god, or maybe the end of the world? Is the sky itself falling?

Who could be responsible for this? Who could you suspect to be behind this? What could this be a sign of? Who do you call to ask about this? Who could you call?

And now that the whole world has witnessed these events.. what will this mean for the future of the living world?

At the time of the 'Incident' that would later be come to known by a majority of mankind as 'The Great Cataclysm' the Mangaka was doing what he usually did, which was locking himself inside of his office at his estate which was roughly positioned on Japan's countryside, where it was nice and quiet without any interruptions.

Anyways, he was working which was nothing new however something extraordinary happened; his pen slipped while he was drawing his sketches. He felt something Overwhelming no it was more than that. it was an impossible amount of spiritual energy emanating from a very specific source. This caused the mans right hand to transform into the shape of a lizard head "So you felt that too kid?" The Hollow said in a serious tone, which was very rare for it to do.

Sora glanced at the hollow from the corner of his eyes before immediately stopping what he was doing immediately standing up and opening the double windowed door behind him and looking up at the sky which is where the source of the reiatsu was coming from. His formerly tired and uninterested expression became one of seriousness and concern as he saw the gargantuan crack in the sky above, tearing through the fabric of reality itself.

Upon focusing upon the crack he felt the energy of Shinigami and Something else.[/b] something that shouldn't exist. The man then reached into the pocket of his blazer, pulling out a lighter and a packet of cigarettes, taking one and igniting it before slipping the packet and lighter back into the pocket.

"Good Grief..." He said taking a puff from his smoke and looking up the sky with a serious expression. It looks like the Mangaka would have to put his work on hold for a while.

During the Demon's attempted raid of the shop. The streets from the supposed quake that was thought to be going on. The police and local Yakuza are taking control and calming down citizens. Preventing any would be panic and looting. Though that does stop Esper who few people can see from robbing as many jewelry stores as she can during the confusion. As she stepped out completely decked and covered in jeweled rings, golden necklaces, and fancy watches.

She then turned her head to notice that familiar presence of that brat Rao who fought her once before. She then also noticed the reiatsu of two Shinigami, another Quincy, and various individuals that reminded her of Rao's flames. While that burn wound was able to heal and the scar faded away she still felt a phantom pain just being reminded of it. She wants nothing to do with him or whatever is going on there as it's not any of her business.

That is until as she is walking away she stumbled a bit during what felt like an actual earthquake before she turned around and looked up to see the beam of light shooting towards the sky. As the police and yakuza were starting to panic too unprepared for anything like this. That was when she realized that if they could see it too then that beam was not made by spiritual power. She then looked up at the hole in the sky and felt more Shinigami up there.

"Is that, Soul Society? But if that is showing up in the sky then," Esper mused out loud.

She knew enough that if the barrier between worlds was broken then something extremely bad is going to happen, she then opened a Garganta back to Hueco Mundo before turning around and remembering Rao is still there and is probably going straight to the source of that beam like the blood-lusting battle-hungry fool that he is. However, she has other people to protect who can't fight for themselves. As she walks through the Garganta back to Hueco Mundo.

Thankfully no hole in the sky here, but would they all still be safe here? Is Hueco Mundo still in danger? If it is not affected by what's the come are Hollows going to starve without any source of souls to devour or are forced to cannibalize themselves into extinction? The only thing that matters now is she spends what might be her last moments with those three young Arrancar, her family.

Fiore had been assigned to work as reinforcements: a Mr. Rao Fugard, Fraccion of the First, hadn't been back in a while. Taking a bow as he leapt out of the portal to the World of the Living, he immediately noticed that something was very, very off. Immense Spiritual Pressure flooded the area with no end in sight, and the normally-ignorant human populace was staring and pointing at the huge beacon lighting up the sky.
Fiore's eyes widened as he tried to keep his balance on the shaking ground. This could mean so many things--first of all, the bright beacon stealing every possible spotlight while becoming one itself was not welcome. Second of all, this meant he could finally--no, no, this was more important. Something was happening on the other side of the rift: a view of more people in an odd-looking land, somehow flatter and brighter than the one he knew. Fiore had never seen Soul Society, but this seemed like the place he had heard about. Both sides staring at the other, excited and scared and in awe...oh, how Fiore longed to be in the center, like a moth drawn to the light. But a strange sort of primal fear kept him down.

HUECO MUNDO

The vast desert was quiet. A faint wind blew gently across the white dunes. In the distance the roar of a Hollow echoed out across the moonlit sands. Sitting atop a broken pillar was Asura, the pink haired Hollow/Shinigami hybrid. One leg hung off the edge, his other was pulled in so his arm could rest on his knee. The sleeves of his white robes flapped as the breeze moved past him. His chin rested in his palm as he stared out into the vast desert around the ruins. His hands were covered in blood and it stained his robes. A cloud passed overhead, shading him in darkness for a moment. Only his red eyes could be seen until the moon illuminated him once more.

Suddenly, a sound like a sonic boom rang out high above. He raised his brow and lazily leaned back so he could see better. The sky now looked like some kind of broken mirror, the cracks glowed an eerie purple. It was a spiral design, but didn't move, other than smaller cracks which opened up alongside the larger ones.

He narrowed his eyes at the weird anomaly in the sky.

"You see that?"

Asura glanced over his shoulder, chuckled and then looked back at the sky.

"I wonder... It feels familiar somehow. You guys feel that?"

He moved to stand, crossing his arms over his chest, but inside his robes so his sleeves hung loose at his sides.

"No... silly me. You're dead. You can't feel anything anymore."

Below him, strewn about the rubble were a large portion of the 10th Espada's Fraccion... well, pieces of them anyway. It was gruesome to say the least. With this act, he would finally begin his great work.

To all humanity, we are sending this message. From now, this planet will be reborn anew, changed into a new world. The civilization of humanity was not right. Our growth was incorrect. Thusly, I have judged. We will rebel against all of human history thus far—- against Pan-Human History. Once more, the world will be filled with Mystery not of Man. This planet will reclaim the era of the gods. For that reason, gods have descended from a distant sky.

Hageshi Rekka, Third Seat of the 9th Division, had been placed on standby at the main Senkaimon gate, at high alert to jump in quickly if the Demons overwhelmed Yoshinori and Tensai. Ran and Sora were on patrol duty in America, while Osaka had been drafted on comms duty. The young Shinigami waited while viewing a live feed of the battle, rather envious that Rao and the edgelord Quincy he fought previously got to go and fight while he was stuck as backup forces.

Eventually, the allied forces won, breaking into Tendo's shop afterwards. Interesting. Was the Tendo who worked there actually the former Captain who created the Hogyoku? And what was he up to this time? Rekka would soon find out, as a massive Reiatsu flare vastly exceeding even Gaia's shorted out the feed.

Then the sky cracked.

O god of the void! I declare the defeat of human intellect, here and now. Their vision is blurred, their limbs weak, and their knowledge stagnant. As the final human, I hereby declare that all choices, setbacks, and prosperities shall be cast down into nothingness. This one blow will bring down the gods… Ring the bell of reformation!

"Nani the hell?" Rekka looked up, seeing cracks form across the sky, emitting the Reiatsu of spiritually aware humans like Quincy and Fullbringers. As well as something bizarre and immense. Such a thing could only be a second Hogyoku, a vast Reishi resource that could grant wishes. But it felt... alive. And whatever it was planning to do, wasn't good.

Rekka turned around and started air dashing to the First Division headquarters in panic, dodging anyone who got in his way. He had to warn the Vice Captain no matter what.

"OH MY SOUL KING THIS IS THE LOSTBELT WHERE THE WORLD TURNS INTO SOUL TRIGGER ISN'T IT."

𝖳𝖠𝖦𝖲:

Soul Society, while the Demon Invasion was happening at Tendo Shoten

This was not the holiday he initially imagined. Right after the promised search for Maria’s sister, he went straight to Hawaii to spend time with his fullbringer girlfriend and her family to celebrate Christmas. While he indeed enojyed his vacation together with them, it was quickly cut short by the series of emergency meetings and missions he needed to attend over the next couple of days.

Thankfully, Yukari was understanding; as she was not foreign to how the spiritual world works.

The incident at Tendo Shoten filled his mind, even as he walked through the streets of Seireitei with the Fourth Division Captain. What were the demons up to this time? And why was it bad timing, all of a sudden? What could be a more pressing matter to discuss than this? The white haired woman did not utter a single word since they arrived, and his thoughts only wandered further into the deep.

Firstly, he recalled noticing a faint signature of the former 12th Division at Rengoku’s office before his promotion. It was still a puzzle to him why he was there, and for a moment, suspected if it had anything to do with it. Were they communicating constantly? Why did Katsumoto-Taichou hide the former 12th Division Captain’s existence? Was he also aware that the Visoreds were alive? All these things didn’t make any sense. Why then were they ordered to be eradicated in the first place?

On the other hand, Shorei glanced to Hyakuji’s side. She could tell he was in deep thought, but didn’t bother to interrupt his contemplation and continued walking alongside him as they headed to the meeting.

Hyakuji was brought back to reality when the woman came to a halt. It was then that he realized they were already in front of the Captain Commander’s office. Captain Avasarala stepped inside first, while Hyakuji followed suit.

All the Captains were present– and were already discussing amongst themselves when the two newly arrived death gods joined in the conversation.

“The demons are at it again. They are currently inva—,” the long-maned shinigami began. While the expression on his face betrayed any sense of dread, it was clear from his tone that he was anxious and he wanted everyone to mobilize as soon as possible rather than lock themselves in a meeting.

Before he could continue, however, he was astonished at Katsumoto's revelation…

“We are creating… what?” A superior form of Hogyoku… was the last thing he heard from the old man’s lips. Was that the reason why Tendo was in his office that time?

Hyakuji widened his eyes in surprise, albeit briefly. What on earth had gotten in the Captain’s mind? Captain Commander Rengoku Katsumoto, along with these other powerful leaders of Soul Society… were present during the time the war with the quincies broke out. They were not ignorant of their history, and yet… were they determined to repeat it?

The Hospital District, Schatten Bereich

Everyone could feel it. For the first time in five hundred years, everyone in the Wandenreich could feel not only the energy of the Living Realm, but that of the Realm Beyond even that.  The entire population of the Quincy world was awake and aware that something...extraordinary was going on.

Donning her old uniform in a hurry, former Leutnant Eisa Stadtenfeld rushed past gawping civillians to the portal grounds. It suprised her little to see her former commander, Benedmar Weizarth, already standing there with most of his Senior Staff.  It was more suprising to see all of the portals active. Dozens were pouring through into the Wandenreich. Civillians who had been living in Japan mostly, but a few members of the Jagdarmee.

Although she had long ago since transferred to the Sanitatzstaffel after her horrific experience during the Demon Attack on Tokyo, a part of her felt a dull ache. A reminder that she had once served on the front-lines, answering the call. Today it seemed, the Wandenreich needed every man and woman it could get.

She fell in alongside a number of others, who were instinctively clustering around Sternritter Weizarth.

As she moved to make her presence known, an enormous tower of a man strode past her, his cape swaying behind him. Robard Domineier.

Now two of the Reich's most powerful Sternritter were standing together. She sensed that the remaining three were either coming or were already engaged on crucial business.

Her heart-beat quickened, like it hadn't in many months.

She looked around her, many unfamiliar faces. A pang. It had been a long time since she'd been on active duty, primarily recovering but also working to help others recover. From earth-bounded frontliner to hospital-confined nurse.

One familiar face emerged from the portal, cooling her blood. Her estranged husband. If even a powerless former Quincy like him was being evacuated to the Bereich from Earth, then something truly dreadful must be happening back in Japan.

She watched as he and the other civllians were hustled from the plaza. She could have gone to him- but for once, her torn heart did not falter. She had chosen her Duty this day. And she would stand to it, whatever it may be, not at her husbands side or waiting in a nurse's outfit by a sick-bed, but in her soldat's uniform, Iron Cross in hand.

Benedmar exchanged a few words with Robard, and turned his attention to the gathering mob of Quincies, some in uniform, some without.

As one, regardless of their origin, their previous assigned duty, they snapped to attention, delivering a perfect salute to the Generalrichter.

His stone visage did not crack.

"At Ease, Soldaten."

His gaze swept over them, and he did not comment on any of their presence. For a man who had lived his life by the strictest codes and discplines, the fact he was not belabouring them over their messy uniforms, abandoned duties, and mixed formations was in of itself a singular event.

"We stand ready."

The last of the portals shut down as he spoke, and an eerie quiet now hung over the Plaza. Usually thronging with activity and inter-world travel, it seemed everyone who was coming back had done so.

Yet, even with the portals closed, everyone in the portal could still feel an eerie energy pulsing in their senses.

The cold world of shadow and ice...thrummed with warmth. A spring breeze, Eisa recognised it. But there was no Wind in Schatten Bereich.

Nonetheless, the Iron Banner fluttered high above them.

Soon, more Quincies began filtering into the Plaza. Vorhuts, Jager, even the Emperor's Schutzstaffel, and more Sanitazstaffel from the Hospital like Eisa.

The entire Reich was gathering.

Whatever was happening in the Other Worlds, it was stirring up a hornet's nest like nothing had in centuries.

What would the Reich do?

She suspected they would all soon find out.

Continuation of Hyakuji's post...

1st Division - Captain's Assembly Hall

Over their very heads, high up in the skies of Soul Society where literal cracks in the sky. Breaks in the very fabric of their reality. It was not exaggerating things to say the situation was dire. The air within the meeting hall was tense. There were a multitude of emotions running through the various Captains. Some were frustrated, some angry, some even fearful. Most wanted to act immediately, others wanted more time to study the phenomenon. As it often happened, sides were being drawn on how to deal with the situation.

While the Captains argued and discussed amongst themselves, Katsumoto was quietly conversing with Hyakuji who had come in through one of the side entrances along with the 4th Division Captain, Shoreh Avasarala. When she entered, her eyes met Katsumoto's and she nodded in reply to his unspoken query. The two had been friends for so long that body language alone was enough to convey their intended meaning. She then walked across the room and stood in her spot beside the other Captains, the 3rd and 5th Captains parting to give her room. They nodded to her out of respect and then continued their conversations.

Hyakuji's eyes widened at whatever the Captain Commander was whispering to him. Once he had said what Hyakuji needed to hear, he gestured for him to leave them and instructed his Vice Captain to wait for him in his office next door.

The Captain Commander then turned his attention to the Captains before him.

"ENOUGH!"

He slammed the tip of his zanpakuto's sheath against the hardwood floor. The sound it made was akin to thunder. The Captains immediately fell silent and there was an uneasy tension in the room. Katsumoto set his sheathed sword down and let it rest against the side of his chair. He then cast his eyes back to the group, looking from one Captain to another before he continued.

"Our priority is to the safety of the Soul Society and the Soul King. Before we do anything, we safeguard them. I want the four Gatekeepers to return to your respective headquarters and be ready to defend Seireitei and Rukongai if it comes to that."

Each of the four Captains mentioned looked at each other and then back to the Captain Commander.

"Daisho, investigate the anomaly above us and report back to me directly."

The 12th Division Captain remained silent behind his golden mask, his mind already racing at what he might find. The scientist in him was growing more and more anxious to examine the cracks in the sky. So much so that his hand was shaking at his side.

"You all need to be aware that this... situation... might very well be caused by an experiment that the Central 46 have sanctioned along with my cooperation."

It was just enough of the truth to be concerning, but no so much to cause panic. He would need to be careful here.

"The exiled Shinigami, Sadaharu Tendo is attempting to create a perfected Hōgyoku, one that will not carry the same risks as it's predecessor. That is what was promised, but judging by the anomaly above, I am now concerned about the ramifications..."

He paused and ran two fingers over his silver mustache, a suddenly pensive moment from the Captain Commander.

"No... that's not true. I was always concerned, but now I am... nervous."

Katsumoto looked up to see the Captains staring at him, some of them with their mouths hung open, others with brows furrowed. He cleared his throat and then continued.

"Which is why we must be vigilant! Avasarala, have your healers at the ready and the hospital prepared. Everyone not directly mentioned, unless you have been told otherwise, you are to remain in Seireitei and be ready to act when I call upon you."

He narrowed his eye at the group.

"Is that clear?"

Suddenly the group straightened up and replied together:

"YES COMMANDER!"

The old man nodded.

"Thank you all. If anyone has a problem with what we just went over, keep it to yourself. Once this immediate threat is dealt with, we can go from there. For now..."

His cheek lifted slightly, just shy of a grin.

"Get to work."

Each Captain mentioned specifically left the meeting hall rather quickly to attend to their duties. Avasarala casually slipped her arm around Yama's and walked with him as they left. The two old friends knew better than to bother Katsumoto with their own concerns. He had the entirety of Soul Society to worry over. They would do their part in supporting him.

The twins were nowhere to be seen, likely slipping into the shadows to gather intel as well. Daisho waved away 5th Captain Hinawa as he approached, rambling about how he was much too busy to stop and chat. Hinawa rolled his eyes behind his glasses and then left as well, likely to do his own research on the phenomena above. Iroh's father, Captain Tsukishima and Shishio, the Captain of the 13th Division both left together. They chatted briefly before saying their goodbyes. Both were gatekeepers and would need to report to their respective Divisions. Hayato noticed his friend seemed even sicker lately and it pained him.

Godai was already outside, standing on the roof of the 1st Division, staring up at the glowing cracks in the sky. His red eyes narrowed. He wondered if the others could feel it. That slithering, coiling sensation over his skin, like some unseen doom was approaching. A sudden breeze rustled his blonde hair and caused the pieces of his gold jewelry to clink against each other.

"The Commander undersold it. Something is wrong."

At World's End

Hyakuji waited outside the office as commanded; while the expression on his face never changed, what Katsumoto told him gave him a sense of dread.

He walked the narrow hallway leading to a small window, which somehow, offered an overlooking view of Seireitei and all of Soul Society. It was not as panoramic as the view from the Captain’s Office, but it was decent nonetheless.

Hands folded at the back, he studied the peaceful landscape which had been protected by countless soul reapers over the course of time. It was something he wished to maintain, albeit not on the account of a towering pile of lifeless souls, be it shinigami or the other races. How to achieve peace without the shedding of blood? If he couldn’t do it on his own, even with all his might, would it be possible to seek the hogyoku and wish for it? Will it truly be granted without any price? He resolved to help his beloved collecting the shards for her healing, but he never thought of using it for such a grand dream. Yet, maybe…

His wandering thoughts resurfaced to reality when he noticed a small crack in the sky, which eventually branched out into larger fracturest tearing through the heavens. Like a broken mirror, or a fragile glass, the fissure unfolded a rift, with small portions crumbling opening some sort of portal to the other dimensions. At first, it looked like a garganta, but there were no lesser hollows nor menos grande stepping out of it. Instead, the realm of the living could almost be vividly seen through it, as if it were colliding with the spiritual realm.

Hyakuji’s first instinct was to contact Yukari and ask her how she was. He wanted to get to her as soon as possible, or at least investigate this matter for himself but he was strictly commanded to stay no matter what happened. With a gritted teeth and clenched fist, he stayed put in frustration. For the past few months, despite his ascension to higher ranks, this was the only time that he truly felt powerless to do anything.

From the window, he noticed the Ninth Division Third Seat hurrying in panic towards the First Division Headquarters. He probably knew something. However, given his weird statements about parallel universes and all those shenanigans, it became more difficult to believe the younger death god.

Soon after, his phone beeped, with a message coming from the 12th Division Researcher Tensai Toshiaki. The message was brief and straightforward, and it was something that came out rather unexpected. Just a few days ago, he and Maria went out to look for Valentina; who would have thought that they’d have a lead through the quirky death god. However he encountered her was not important; it was probably once in a lifetime chance, and he wasn't going to waste it. Thus, as requested, he immediately called his friend and informed her of sister’s whereabouts.

When the rifts between worlds began to open, Maria was in the courtyard of the Eleventh Division Barracks, and turned her eyes to the sky alongside so many of her peers, in awe of the once in a lifetime sight they got the chance to witness. Most could not even comprehend what was going on, they thought that it was maybe an odd Garganta and so readied for battle, others could tell that it was different, yet still could not explain the phenomenon.

The young Fullbringer turned Shinigami perceived something different. The same, unexplainable tug that pulled her out of the cafe she and Hyakuji were having drinks and dragged her to the hotel room where her sister had resided in moments before they arrived... she could feel it again.

She could feel that this was somehow related to her sister. And that her sister was on the other side. And so, Maria did not hesitate.

"Should we inform the- hey! Maria?! Where are you going?!" her friend Fatima, who was also staring off to the sky, suddenly called out when she saw the one eyed Fullbringer hop forward. Maria landed on the top of the barracks gate, glared at the crack in the sky, and suddenly leapt towards it. Much to her dismay, however, it was not a portal - as soon as the woman got too close, a powerful Reiatsu signature suddenly zapped her, flicking her away like a fly. Falling across the sky with a trail of smoke behind her, Maria slammed to the streets below, to the shock and surprise of the other Eleventh Division members. Fatima rushed past and helped her up.

"What the hell, Maria? What was that all about?" she yelled. Maria's uniform was left scorched and the woman herself was battered and weak, barely holding onto her friend and helping herself up to her feet.

Her Denreishinki beeped. It was Hyakuji again, and he was speaking about what Maria had already guessed - according to Tensai Toshiaki, this was Valentina's doing, and he requested the Shinigami to come down to the World of the Living at once.

"Thanks, Hya, I... already guessed that this was related to her," Maria began a voice message to Hyakuji. "I don't think I'm in the condition to... go on a mission right now, though."

Cole had a late night on guard duty, so he was asleep when the sky broke.  He tossed and turned, the panicked cries of the Shinigami outside his barracks not filtering through the dreams.  Why would they?  There was constant yells, cries, and gibberish that he had to consciously ignore coming from his zanpakuto.  At this point, screaming was almost the background noise of his life.

He was walking through a dark forest, and could feel thousands of eyes on him; he took another step, and found himself in a brightly lit cathedral, another step and a vast desert, the terrain kept shifting as he walked, without any pattern or reason.  Through all of these environs, he felt fear, hate, curiosity, rage; not from him.  He pressed on, the horizon constantly shifting.  There was no end to it, and the oppressive emotions around him never lessened.

After what must have been hundreds of shifts, he felt a presence behind him; he spun to look, the motion reflected in his physical body and launching him bodily off of his bunk.  The rookie shinigami landed with a loud crash, and slowly realized a large portion of the panicked yelling was not, in fact, coming from inside his head.  He rushed outside, forgetting to add the dream to his journal, and saw a gaggle of other Shinigami, including a few seated officers, pointing behind him, above the building.

He turned to look, and saw massive cracks in the sky beginning to close.  Loud snaps and shockwaves echoed through Soul Society as the cracks began to collapse on themselves.  The cracks probably weren't a good sign, he supposed; but them closing could mean a large variety of things as well.  No one around seemed to know what it meant, they would have to wait for official word from command.

If that word was going to be the truth, well; it's not like he was going to know.  Not yet, at least.

Whatever had been happening, was now over. The armies of the Schatten Bereich, poised to invade the world and carry the battle to the Seitanrei, were recalled and disbanded once more. But not everything was to return to normal. An uneasy tension remained in the once still air.

For some unfathomable reason, wind still blew in the Schatten Bereich. An earthly wind, that ruffled normally still air, fluttered banners, and left everyone on edge. The worlds- plural- had changed, and whatever semblance of normalcy was restored now, all felt it was a temporary measure at best. A calm, a lull before the Storm would begin once more in earnest.

Returning with reluctance to her assigned situation, Leutnant Steinfeld couldn't help but feel an immense sense of disappointment. True, she should be relieved that nobody was harmed, that all out war had been avoided, and that she had merely had to stand around waiting for a few hours, as everyone's eagerness ebbed into a sombre mood, before finally evaporating once an all-clear was given.

Yet she couldn't help but feel she had been on the cusp of something great. Something momentous. A chance to be...to do...something of worth again. She remembered the sense of satisfaction she had felt as a field agent, leaping into action, fighting a real Shinigami. She remembered also- though she had never truly forgotten- the burning hell of the Demon Invasion, the constant smell of sulphur and burning flesh, and her own agonising wounds and near-death.

For some time she had been running from those memories, she knew. As she had run from her loveless, failed marriage. She had poured herself entirely into it, but she could never truly give her husband what he wanted. She was far too much like everything he himself had wanted to be, and was now too self-consumed with apathy and bitterness to ever be again .

And so, quietly, discreetly, she had given up, given in. No formal divorce had been requested or filed yet, but in deed as well as word they might as well have been.

Entering the mostly still vacant Hospital Ward, she tutted at the discarded rolls of supplies.  Those Sanitatzstaffel who had remained, anticipating a flow of casualties to treat, had largely left, as artificial evening fell on the Schatten Bereich, crystal clocks tolling the changing of hours.  Soon a night shift would arrive, she knew, and likely be bored, as there were rarely injuries or illness in the Shadow Realm, though a few were always kept on stand-by, in case agents in the field had to be portalled in for emergency treatment.

But right now there were no field agents on duty, she knew. The entire Wandenreich had withdrawn from the Mortal World, ready to re-invade it and fight the Seitanrei, and had then...simply watched, as whatever great calamity was occurring, simply stopped.

She suspected that this would, in time, like so many other false alarms over the ages, be forgotten as one more oddity in this ever changing, ever strange universe.

Picking up a discarded roll of bandages in her gloved hand, she regarded it with a sigh. Was this it for her too, then? To always be standing by, on the side-lines, waiting for someone to roll in?

"There must be more I can do." She whispered. "If I cannot be wife, mother, teacher or warrior, let me at least be something more than a bored bed-changer."

Silence greeted her.

With reluctance, she went to take off her military uniform, and sign out for the evening.

Suddenly there was a sudden -whoosh- of air through the whole room, and the crystal chimes clanged. An emergency portalling? But from where? Who?

Dropping gently from a portal directly into one of the many free crash-beds, a heavily wounded, bleeding young man, his skin almost deathly pale from blood loss, his hair a blonde-tone turned brown.  Two unknown Quincies accompanied him.

"You, attend to his wounds." They said. She did not recognise them, which was odd. But their uniforms bore the sigil of the Emperor's Own, and so she saluted.

"By His will, at once." She responded mechanically. Grunting, they turned, and re-entered the emergency portal, vanishing once more along with it.

Now she was alone, a dying man in a crash bed.

"Nurse it is then." she muttered to herself, exchanging her white gloves for surgical ones.

She quickly pulsed out a call for help.

Adventure or no adventure, she had a job to do.

Duty always comes first.
