The Endless Bliss was Just a Dream

What happened to the once-paradise island was still a shock to him. How come he did not check on Yukari or Hawaii itself right after the Skyfall incident? Why didn’t she contact him? It was seemingly impossible that a clan of fullbringers was not able to defend themselves against such a threat. He wanted to believe they survived, that she did… that she was somewhere out there… Hiding. Probably. Hopefully.

However, there were no hints of her whereabouts. Or her family. Their house was burnt, the academy crumbled into ruins. There were dead bodies, bloodied and charred scattered in the powdery landscape. The seabreeze tasted like rust, as the pristine blue waters turned red. There was no longer any Aihara or Somah on this island.

He roamed around for another minute, trying to find even just a tiny grain of miracle. But there wasn’t. What he found, however, was her red scarf, torn and burnt, as well as the katana he gifted her. But that was all.

Ironic, isn’t it. He wanted to be stronger so he could protect the people he loved and cared about. That was what motivated him to become shinigami. And now, that he was ready to take on another challenge, to reach the highest position in Soul Society so he can establish peace and order. Not only in the realm of souls, rather in the World of the Living, and other dimensions as well, if possible.

In the end, becoming strong and powerful seemed to be a meaningless endeavour. Despite the great power he had, he wasn’t able to be there and watch over his lover. To protect her, to defend her. Just as he promised.

The heavy cold wind caught his black mane, his cheeks damped from the pouring of lightshower casted by the dark clouds above.

He gripped his zanpakuto tightly, whilsmaking an inaudible vow. The red scarf he found, he tied to the handle of the katana. The sword, he put back into its scabbard and kept it for himself. Until he sees her again, at least.

He turned, facing the sea; and was surprisingly greeted by a colleague.

“Ishiwara-san.”

Irisa Ishiwara
Location: Hawaii
Status: Alive

The humble teacher of Kido Arts of Shin'o Academy, Irisa Ishiwara, went down to one knee, her hand slowly rummaged through the remains in front of her, her fingers touching a book, and a small relic statue, both hidden beneath charred wood and stone. There was no denying - what happened here was a tragedy, and an unprecedented one.

It was not difficult to tell from the ambient Reishi still concentrated in the site of the academy that no ordinary person could have done this. Not a mere Hollow attack. The Fullbringer clan which made this academy their home was powerful, there was no denying that. And yet, the destruction was so meticulous and thorough... There did not seem to be a single survivor, as far as the eyes could see.

Slowly, Irisa rose back to her feet, raindrops trickling down her wide witch hat - she slightly tipped it, frowning and looking down upon the remains in silence.

It was at this time that Hyakuji finally addressed her. She was standing behind his back, her eyes turned away from him. As soon as she felt several large Reiatsu signatures in the World of the Living trickle down, and noticed her Vice-Captain rush towards the site with unprecedented concern... she knew that she had to come. She finished her last lesson with extreme haste, concerning her own students for how much she needed to leave, then gated here as soon as she could.

The worst had happened to him. Irisa answered from behind:

"Who are the suspects, Vice-Captain?"

The sky continued to lament over the tragedy. Whether or not the Vice-Captain was still shedding a tear over his loss, one could only guess as the light shower turned into a heavy rain and his face betrayed any emotion he was currently feeling.

“I am not sure,” Hyakuji said simply, taking a brief pause before he finally turned to face the Kido Arts teacher, “ as you might have noticed, the reiatsu surrounding the area is quite vague. There seem to be a mix of shinigami and demon energy. But I assume, there might also be death gods stationed here who unfortunately lost their lives. The Skyfall incident has affected all the realms. I am not sure if the demons also took the opportunity to attack, and the only theory I have is, well…”

Another brief stoic pause. This time, he was distracted by the thought that he gave Yukari the shard. He was confident that she could defend herself. He even reassured the Captain Commander that she could. But then, this happened.

A careless mistake, something as rational as him wouldn’t have committed. If not for love.

He was unsure if he should tell his colleague about what he did. But since she knew about the Hueco Mundo shard, he might as well come clean this time too.

“You know about the Hueco Mundo shard. You know that it was still incomplete… You also know about the demon attack in Soul Society and the reason behind it... well, I snuck the shard out and gave it to Yukari after we defeated Prince Ilvamal. She also had the shard from the Quincy. I can only guess someone was after it. It could be the demons.”

“...or it could be someone from our side.”

Hyakuji gave an interesting theory - he revealed that Yukari was in possession of two of the four Hogyoku Shards, the one from Soul Society and one from the Quincy, so whoever was after her and the Fullbringer clan may have been after the shards. Neither of them were in the ruins of the academy, so if they really were here at the moment of the battle, they departed somewhere in the aftermath.

Silently, Irisa turned towards Hyakuji, then slowly stepped around him, her boots briefly touching the gathering rain puddles. Indeed, the remnant signatures of the Reiatsu which fought in the battle, aside from the Fullbringers, was a mix of demonic and soul reaper energies... so she could not immediately dismiss Hyakuji's theory of a betrayal.

Something about the ruins caught her attention while Hyakuji spoke. The damage inflicted. It was a bit more than just your usual fare of destruction and flames.

"If you believe that the attackers may have been motivated by the prospect of capturing the Hogyoku Shards, then, either said entity captured the shards after taking them from Yukari and the Fullbringers by force... or, somehow, she managed to hide them, and said entity destroyed the academy as punishment," Irisa reasoned, considering the possible options. The object that drew her attention was one of the pillars, sliced apart by a slash that, at first glance, appeared to have come from a Zanpakuto. She kneeled down in front of the remaining bottom half, touched it with a finger to assess the smoothness, then pulled out her nodachi. With one eye closed, she compared the precision of the cut with her Zanpakuto's blade.

It's even more perfect than a Zanpakuto... A sword slash would cause irregularities and cracks, simply due to the non-zero thickness of the sword's blade. And, obviously, a demon's Reishi blast would not create such a perfect slice...

After briefly allowing this thought to run in her mind to consider possible theories, Irisa turned to Hyakuji, staring eye to eye.

"You are right, Vice-Captain. I know of the attack of the Demons in Soul Society, and of a second one in Tokyo that took place right before... the sky cracked. However, I have reason to guess that the Demons were not alone in this battle - if they were even present."

She placed the tip of her weapon on the ground, resting her hands on the handle like a cane, and stared to the distance.

"The amount of power that would have required the Demon Kingdom to utterly annihilate this school would have required a sealed Prince, if not two or three of them, alongside a horde of their subjects. That would have raised alarm all across the Gotei 13, much like the invasion of Tokyo had. Since that did not happen... we must have been fooled by the intervention of someone else."

Perhaps Hyakuji's traitor theory held some merit? If so... who could have possibly done this? Once again, Irisa turned to glare at Hyakuji, and continued:

"...You hid her identity from me until the last possible moment, Vice-Captain. You told no one in the Gotei 13 that she holds the Hogyoku Shards, even against the orders of your Captain. Then, do you know who could have known about her?"

“Or we have been distracted by the Skyfall Incident. The energy released by the fullbringer merged with the Hogyoku was enormous enough to cause distress among the realms. The intelligence reported there was also a fissure in Hueco Mundo. It is highly likely that the same disturbance was also felt in the realm of quincies,” Hyakuji pondered as he met the gaze of the kido specialist.

Both were keen to express their thoughts on the matter. There could have been many possibilities indeed. Irisa thought that someone might have intervened, probably conspiring with the creatures of hell. The Vice-Captain merely thought they must’ve taken advantage of the incident, recalling a few more details before Valentina’s merging with the new Hogyoku Tendo had created.

“The demons might have taken this opportunity to attack…”

“Before the incident, I saw the demons descend from heaven… there was a girl with a patched eye among them. Seems to be the leader. However, before I could intervene, I was called for by Katsumoto-taichou. When we came back, it was not the demons Okamoto-san and the rest of the group were facing but the said fullbringer. The demons might have noticed that we are going to intervene. And looked for some alternative…”

He walked past the other shinigami, in deep thought about how to answer her inquiry. There was no one else who knew of her identity, not that he had mentioned her name specifically to his friends who could have known about her.

“There are a few people who know I have a mortal lover. But I have also kept her identity from them."

Irisa seemed to probe more about Yukari’s identity or contact. She was thinking the tan fullbringer held the keys to unlocking this mystery.

A potential lead… Hyakuji could not think of anyone but…

“Tendo…” the long maned reaper blurted out.

“... he knew about her. During the demons’ invasion in Soul Society, he met Yukari alongside another fullbringer. He might have some information we don’t know yet as of the moment.”

What happened in Tendo Shoten, how he was responsible for the chaotic incident, was still a puzzle to Hyakuji. The man did not give an explanation in front of the Goteijusantai, as if nothing happened. As if, Katsumoto did not care, or at least, had an idea it was going to happen. They seemed lax about it despite the impact it had brought to Soul Society and the World of the Living.
Were they conspiring against humanity? Why did the Captain go along with it, if he knew? What was the point of it? Why was Gaia, a fullbringer, involved in it? Why was there a quincy? Why Valentina, of all people?

The shinigami wanted answers.

However, they got a more urgent business at hand; and he let go of the questions he had in mind as he waited for what his colleague was about to say.

Hyakuji offered an alternative to Irisa's theory, and the two Shinigami would continue to bounce ideas off one another, working off the little information they had to guess what might have happened to Yukari and her clan that day.

"The demon horde that attacked Tokyo was defeated by two Shinigami and their allies from the World of the Living... it said so in the report," Irisa answered. The details that Yoshinori and Tensai left for the Gotei 13 were somewhat vague simply because there was so much to report - and, much like the kido teacher imagined, the climactic duel against Valentina Tokareva was more relevant for anyone who might be reading info about the mission. "I doubt a demon invasion is something you can organize and summon so easily, so the demons in Tokyo are out of the count for participating here. There are two princes and one king in the Demon Kingdom, and at most only one of the three participated in Tokyo, so, in theory, that leaves the other two capable of participating in a mission elsewhere, but..."

She paused, staring into the distance. The perfect slice she measured was still on her mind, as well as the Shinigami reiatsu that both of them could feel permeating the battle site. Of course, there was just as much demonic power she could feel, so the Demon Kingdom had to be involved somehow, but...

"...I don't know. I just have a hunch that something doesn't add up, and could be a sign of a development greater than we think."

Right on cue, Hyakuji mentioned Tendo. Right. Sadaharu Tendo, the former Captain of the Twelfth Division, was one of the best sources on news coming from the World of the Living. More importantly, Hyakuji confirmed that he should know about Yukari, and thus possibly about her possession of the Hogyoku Shards, as well. Irisa could not imagine him helping the Demons, but...

"...yes, you are right," she answered, finishing her own thoughts verbally. "Even if he doesn't know anything about it, Tendo may give us a clue for what to search for." If Hyakuji headed out towards Tokyo, she would follow.

Irisa continued to share her thoughts on the matter, stating that there was one high ranking demon leading a horde in Tokyo before the incident, which actually coincides with what Hyakuji witnessed for himself.

“You may be right. If the demons were defeated in getting this particular Hogyoku, they might have had a back up plan to go after the other shards even though it’s incomplete. I fought Ilvamal with Yukari, Toshiaki-san, and the other fullbringer, Janus. The shard emits a unique reiatsu. It would not be hard for the Demon Prince to locate it, especially that he had encountered it himself already.”

While the heavens continued to weep, the pain that kept tugging at Hyakuji’s heart was dispelled for a moment as he probed deeper with Irisa about the reason for the assault of the Somah clan. True, his loss was unbearable. But he can’t be distracted. The world has not, even once, stopped turning just because of a death of a loved one.

Like him, the kido teacher thought Tendo might know something about the incident. Hyakuji still had mixed feelings about the guy after the incident. Then of course, he had to act civil and professional. Whatever his questions might be, he hoped to clarify it with some time in the near future.

For now, they need to focus on the more urgent matter.

“It’s settled then,” the Vice-Captain tried to put up a smile, “We shall start investigating by asking the former 12th Division Captain.”

He gave another glance at the ruins, and surveyed the fallen with his eyes. He took a deep bow facing the manor of the Aihara, as if making an apology, a promise, that their deaths would not be in vain.

With Irisa's artificial Senkaimon ability, the two Shinigami gated out of the battle site and appeared thousands of miles away, on the streets of Tokyo. There, they approached Tendo Shoten, standing huddled in between the suburban sprawl like always. The hole in front of it, through which an attack that nearly destroyed the entire Universe was fired, had already been patched up and covered with asphalt to restore the road, and this fresh black layer could easily be discerned from the older, washed out roadwork surrounding it.

"Hello!" Irisa called out as soon as she stepped into the shop, alongside Hyakuji. Tendo, sitting on his seat on the other side of the counter with a few papers in his hands, barely raised his eyes from his work before answering:

"Hey, Irisa, Hyakuji."

It wouldn't be hard for a passive observer to tell that the shop's stock has drastically diminished since prior to the... incident. The matter of fact was, as all of his laboratory equipment was confiscated and the lab underneath was completely covered with earth under the orders of the Gotei 13, Tendo's tools for research and development had greatly diminished as well. So, a lot of his production, his handmade engineering and design, simply could no longer be provided. For now, at least. He and the workers of his shop were ingenious enough to think of an alternate solution, perhaps he can put Altair to use.

Tendo lowered the papers in his hands and took a good look at the Vice-Captain. Even knowing how serious Hyakuji had always been, he was uncharacteristically gloomy today. And knowing that both of them suddenly barged in... he may or may not be involved.

"So, what happened?" he asked.

This was rather awkward than he imagined. Him, trying to reconcile Tendo being a good and exemplary captain, as well as the death god who used someone’s life to create a powerful artifact.

From the way he phrased the sentence the moment he saw them, it seems he already had a bit of an idea that this meeting would not be a simple reunion with the First Division.

“The hogyoku shards…” the Vice Captain began, “you recall the Battle in Soul Society? And how you asked me for recommendations for fullbringers to help in there?” he continued, swallowing a lump in his throat, putting up a stronger, more stoic face to hide his current bereavement.

“...one of them, a tanned fullbringer, Yukari…Yuki… was missing. And her home island was in wreckage. That was after the Skyfall Incident. After you created a monster out of a pained, innocent fullbringer,” as much as he tried to be civil, he couldn’t help but spit a bit of venom into his words.

“But I didn’t come here to confront you about that. We are here because we sensed a strange reiatsu in the said island: a mixed reiatsu of a demon and shinigami, it seems… I am trying to justify that there might have been death gods who were killed in the vicinity, but it didn’t feel like a collective energy, rather, just a single powerful one blended with demonic reiatsu… But it doesn’t make sense…”

Hyakuji thought deeper, “So far, we know that Hell is currently ruled by three pure blood demons. At least that was what Ilvamal told us, when we confronted him back then…”

He waited for the other shinigami to input her observations, and once she was done, he'd ask the shop owner of his insights, “Your thoughts?”

Listening to Hyakuji, Tendo glanced away. He tried to ignore the sudden attack on his Hogyoku Valentina project, one which he has already been lamenting for doing personally, but the news of Yukari Aihara's disappearance and possible death, and the destruction of her home island, shook him. He knew of the young Fullbringer girl - someone like her, innocent and thrusted into the ferocity of the spiritual world at such a young age, did not deserve to receive such fate.

Apparently, it was not just demons that were involved in the destruction of the Academy - Hyakuji and Irisa informed him that they registered a powerful Shinigami reiatsu, one which they could not ascribe to defenders from the Gotei 13 who arrived to help the Fullbringers and were felled by the Demon invasion. What this could mean was still uncertain, however, and so the two Shinigami arrived to Tendo Shoten to see whether the shopkeeper had any better ideas.

After Hyakuji finished his side of the story, Irisa nodded politely and continued:

"According to the Vice-Captain, Yukari was in possession of two Hogyoku Shards at the time of the battle, and we did not find them on the site. Whether or not the Demons and their possible allies succeeded in acquiring the shards, it's likely that this is what they were after," After this explanation, she paused, briefly glancing to the side, and then added her own thoughts:

"I noticed irregularities in the ruins of the academy, and I'm not sure if the Demons might have been able to assemble enough forces to defeat Yukari and all her allies in such a, presumably one-sided bout, given how quickly it happened and caught the Gotei 13 off-guard. And... my guess is that someone other than the Demons was involved."

"...right," Tendo confirmed after both of the Shinigami finished their reports, then sighed and rose up from his seat, pacing around the room. "You are right, Hyakuji. The Demon Kingdom is ruled by three demons who are almost two thousand years old, two Princes and one King. They call themselves the Trifecta, and only they have enough power, when sealed to be able to enter the World of the Living, to challenge someone like Yukari."

Briefly mulling over Hyakuji's report of a single, powerful Shinigami presence in the ruins, Tendo turned to stare straight at the Vice-Captain. "Are you implying that a traitor Shinigami is working with the Demons? I... don't know of rogue Shinigami who'd be this strong, and yet would willingly work for the Trifecta..."

He knew of powerful rogues, yes. The Silver Bullet especially. However, he was certain that neither Yasuhiko nor any of his peers would even think of helping the Demon King.

Besides, would someone so powerful even listen to orders? And would the Demons even want to work with a Shinigami, when they know nothing but hatred for Soul Society and all of its defenders? They'd have to be bound to the Demon forces somehow, rather than work on their own will, to be trustworthy...

Surely, the same thoughts must be running through the minds of the two First Division Shinigami too. Irisa certainly considered the same line of thought - and, suddenly, asked:

"Tendo... what about the Togabito? Could this be... a powerful Shinigami, who passed away and resides in Hell?"

The question surprised him, and Tendo stared at Irisa for a good few seconds, before announcing:

"That's impossible."

After glancing back to Hyakuji, then towards Irisa again, he continued. "There have been plenty of utterly villainous Captains and other powerful rogues who passed away throughout history and were sent to Hell... but the last time someone such powerful died was centuries ago. By that point, any Sinner would be grounded up to pure Reishi, losing any consciousness left and being returned to the cycle of rebirth."

"I... see," Irisa muttered, and glanced to Hyakuji herself. That was one of her theories, but it didn't seem like it was going to fly.

A traitor shinigami… of course it was plausible that Tensai’s theories might take into account. Although, from their last conversation, these traitors, whoever they were, were more into bakkoto’s than demons. At least based on their initial investigation.

While it might seem helpful to lay down to the table everything they knew, he just couldn’t disclose such information as it might only confuse them further. He needed to gain more evidence on the matter for it to make sense. If there had been some development with regards to their connection with the demons, he might have. But there were none. At least for now. Besides, he already had trust issues with the former 12th Division Captain, and the kido specialist was mysterious and cunning, you wouldn’t know when she’d betray you.

Which is why it was also difficult to disclose about his meeting with the visoreds. He made a promise to the Silver Bullet that no one in the Gotei would ever know of their existence, and he just couldn’t break it in exchange for avenging the person he loved…

Or can he?

If this was their underhand threat, then keeping them a secret should be out of the question…

They have to know…

He was too absorbed in his own thoughts whilst taking into consideration Irisa’s suggestion of the culprit being a sinner. Even then, he couldn’t dismiss the possibility of the involvement of the said powerful rogue shinigamis. Thus, after a few moments of silence…

“What do you think of the Visoreds?” Hyakuji blurted out,”...hypothetically. If they were alive,” his eyes darted to the former Captain again, the piercing cold blue irises meeting his hazel eyes, “What is the difference between their reiatsu and a normal powerful shinigami? You created them, right?"

There was no intention of mocking this time, just pure curiosity trying to make sense of all the events that happened in the past few months. This was the best thing he could do to cover for their meet-up while trying to gain some more information he wouldn't otherwise get from them.

"Then you must know them in-depth more than we do. Is it possible that they had survived the purge?"

Were they planned, or just mere coincidences? He was confronted by them sure, to join them. But they had not truly revealed to him their true intention. It was quite difficult to find the answer as of the moment but thorough probing on the events that transpired might bear fruit, if they’d persist.

Out of nowhere, Hyakuji chose to bring up an entirely different topic - one which immediately brought both Tendo and Irisa's attention.

"Huh?" Irisa yelped, confused. The Visored? What made Hyakuji connect this incident with them, of all things? How did Hyakuji even know of them? And the worst part was, in spite of following up with a half hearted excuse of merely speaking hypothetically, the Vice-Captain clearly knew more of their fate than he let on. So, Irisa glanced from him to Tendo, waiting for one of the boys to bring some clarity into the conversation.

Tendo responded to Hyakuji's questions with an intense stare - then, after the Vice-Captain finally laid out all of his inquiries, let out a sigh. Briefly, he glanced towards Irisa. Since Hyakuji had already come into contact with at least one Visored, which Tendo was a witness of, he would not have had much issue with speaking sincerely to him alone - however, with Irisa around, he could not give much information.

Irisa knew more than she let on, Tendo was aware - however, he expected the Visored conflict and their survival to be beyond the books she reads every day.

"I don't know if any of them survived the purge. But, if they had, I sincerely doubt one of them could have been involved," he answered and folded his arms. "The Reiatsu of a Visored Shinigami appears entirely indistinguishable from any of their unmodified peers, until they don their mask and tap into their Hollow powers, at which it would appear as more of a mix. And I presume that mix isn't what you felt in Hawaii..."

Irisa shook her head - then, suddenly, she tapped Hyakuji on the arm to draw his attention to her. Her arms were wrapped behind her back, in a stout pose, almost seeking to intimidate.

"Vice-Captain... what, and how, do you know about the Visored?"

Certainly, Irisa didn’t know the soul in front of her was once Kojiro, a visored among the ranks of Kanbe, Yasuhiko and the other Captains and Vice-Captains six centuries ago. Hyakuji forgot that minute detail.

“I… I read it. Accidentally in the restricted section of the Archives. I was looking for more information about the demons and stumbled upon it,” that was a few days after his conversation with Tensai about his suspicion of the traitor. Even then, the said investigation did not progress as far as they wanted.

He’d turn to the former 12th Division Captain, all ears to what he had to say. It was true, they felt a rather different reiatsu compared to the Visored’s he had met. Though, he could not be any less than careful now that Irisa was suspicious of him.

“I really couldn’t tell the difference. I haven’t met any Visored yet,” he said, lying to his teeth. There was no way he could break his promise, especially if Tendo was so sure they had nothing to do about the massacre. While he still had reservations trusting the man again, he needed to do so right now… since he had no evidence to prove the Visoreds guilty.

“My readings is also limited to the history, and not the mention of their nature. Thus, I asked,” he paused thinking about what to say next.

“But, if you say so, then, we’ll drop that theory now. However, we are left at a dead end. If the culprit was not a sinner nor a visored, what else could it possibly be?”

"That does leave us at a conundrum..." Tendo answered Hyakuji's concern, and briefly stared at the ceiling, thinking of possible answers. He did not want to imagine one of the Visored committing such an evil act, and it would be out of character for them to be involved with the Demons... nor could he imagine it being a Sinner, somehow powerful enough to destroy the Soma Clan. "Working from the information you have given me, the one guess I could do is... some sort of rogue Shinigami, who must have slipped our radar and become this powerful, while at the same time having no qualms with working with the Demons..."

But who?

Tendo stepped back towards his shop counter. "Thankfully, such people should be... a handful, if they even exist. I will do the best I can to help you found the identity of this assailant, go through my contacts and see if any of them have any clues," he continued. He'd at least bring up the matter to Yasuhiko, of course, check just in case Silver Bullet went rogue, then go through his connections. Maybe Altair knows of someone, maybe Virgil is familiar with someone rogue... "...You are right, there are some dangerous forces at play, here. I fear we might be on the precipice on the next big battle over the fate of this dimension."

"If you find anything, you know where to contact me," Irisa stated, then turned to Hyakuji. "Let's go, Vice Captain. We'll just have to keep looking."

What else was there left for them to investigate? They might be reaching a dead end of information here.

Irisa's arms were folded behind her back as the two Shinigami stepped out of Tendo Shoten - she briefly walked forward, onto the middle of the street, before she suddenly stopped. A few cars whizzed past, but they drove past the immaterial soul reapers as if they were never there at all.

"Vice-Captain..." Irisa muttered, not even glancing over her shoulder towards Hyakuji yet. "You don't have to lie to me."

She briefly sighed.

"I know about the Visored. I know how they came to be, and that several of them likely survived. And if you know more about their fate than you should... then please, tell me. Rather me, than anyone else in the Gotei 13."

A rogue shinigami outside of Silver Bullet…. That might be plausible. But then, the mix of hellish reiatsu was something they still had to figure out.

Even Tendo couldn’t make sense of the odd spiritual signature. There was no point solving this puzzle with their theories. They had to go out and investigate and gather some more information if they wanted to progress. As such, the kido specialist called on Hyakuji, and bid goodbye to the shop owner.

“Right.”

Just as they walked outside, Irisa again confronted the Vice-Captain about his comments on the Visored earlier. Cunning as always.

“I didn’t lie to you,” the long maned reaper began, “I have truly read about the Visoreds in the Archives,” he replied, walking beside his companion.

“But, if you’re really curious,” he sighed. It was quite frustrating not being able to hide anything from her. Partly because was too observant, she could notice even the slightest details of one’s facial expressions, or a slur in one’s words. Second, it was because he was too honest, so much that lying would only do more harm than good.

“I had been with them during the war,” the Vice-Captain revealed, glancing down at his partner to see her reaction.

“I remained in the battlefield a few moments more when the Captain Commander called all squads to go back to Soul Society. However, I was killed by Tendo himself. On the battlefield. Been reincarnated into different souls a few more times for the past six hundred years. Last time, I was born to a human. And after my death, here I am again.”

It was quite an uncomfortable topic since he had despised his Visored nature since he gained his memories back. As much as possible, he wanted to do away with his past self. Yet, it seems it didn’t stop haunting him even in such a plain conversation as this.

“At any rate, let us not talk about my past. We got a more urgent matter to do,” he remarked, attempting to drift away from the subject.

With little information, Hyakuji wondered where they should start. Perhaps it would be best to gather some more clues on the island, thus, “What do you think about revisiting the island again? Right now, it’s the only lead we have. Maybe it’s worth having a second look.”

The mere sight of it was traumatic. But if he would cower, how would he give justice for Yukari’s death?
