The komorebi of the rising sun sparsely illuminated his rose crimson mask as he strode beneath the canopy of the 7th Divisions maple trees. A pair of them adorned its entryway like aesthetic guardians frozen to time with the vibrance of life still blooming atop their sacrifice. It was early, just a few hours after dawn, but his superior officers had no sympathy and dispatched their giant fledgling shinigami to the streets of South Rukonagi. Normally he would walk a beat, keeping to the standard patrol routes, however there was a matter that required the divisions intervention.

An abandoned dojo deep within the district was scheduled for demolition, however, many gangs terrorized the area leaving the civilian construction teams unable to work without being driven away. In short, his unofficial assignment was to bring the building down himself. His superiors didn’t specify how, perhaps they assumed because of his stature that it could be done with his bare hands? It was grunt work, but a bit of rookie hazing was to be expected.

As he came upon the area, the air became stale with rusted steel and old wood. There was no immediate habitation in the general vicinity which seemed to make it a perfect place for gangs to frequent. He had passed other shinigami as he surveyed the grounds, proving that perhaps this issue was a popular one amongst other divisions as well. The dojo proved to be nestled away on the north end, heavily dilapidated, but yet to be taken in an overgrown by the surrounding flora. As he stepped inside, the dated wood panels groaned audibly as sparse beams of light illuminated the interior. Bosake would continue to wander about, gauging the dojo’s structural integrity near its central most pillars.

Sachio had a day off today. He had been busy with frequent trips to the world of the living, but that time was limited for all shinigami regardless of rank. On his days off he usually handled his paper work but his half brother Senma had been taking great care to make the process simple for him. With the extra time afforded to him, he'd usually be training, but today he was walking through south rukongai. He had another duty to do. He was took make visits to his families farms regularly as the heir to increase moral and ensure production was stable. This time it was. Nothing much to report about the paddies, but something interesting had caught his attention.

There was supposedly a den of criminals due for demolition. It was an old dojo the kind that riddled the rukongai. Where young aspiring Shinigami of common birth or death would go to learn before entering the academy, or a place where aspiring criminals go to learn how to fight.

Sachio was always fond of these kinds of places. Training along side others in the academy was a time when he felt free. As He entered the place he could see why it was marked for destruction. The wood was dying and creaky. It was certainly abandoned. He thought it would all be empty, but as he approached the center he saw an imposing figure clad in a black shihakusho. Sachio knew he wasn't the only shinigami he'd seen in the area, but why would another shinigami enter the dilapidated dojo.

Well I thought I would be admiring the dojo alone. He would announce his presence to the other Shinigami. Making sure to use a noble tone. Perhaps he would be recognized or perhaps not he was quite new to the position after all.

Stories of forgotten battles were etched into the walls like hieroglyphics by blades lost to time. One could tell if they spent enough time that this place was once a safe haven for the zanjutsu arts. There was great detail that went into the layout as well as the craftsmanship of the interior despite the dirt and decay. The giant wondered what his life would be like if he had a communal space like this growing up, how different his path might have turned out. It was a bit somber knowing he was to bring the building down, but having its recreations misused by criminals was completely unacceptable.


As he studied the dojo a bit more intently, finding intrigue in its central pillars for their ornate wood carved designs, the floorboards groaned again signaling company. As he turned his eyes befell a fellow shinigami to the likes of which he was not familiar. He was a little more than a foot shorter than himself, with dark hair and a pair of peculiar golden irises. What stood out most vibrantly was the orange scarf he sported over his shuhakusho, that, and the pair of zanpakuto at his side. Dual wielders were rare, perhaps indicating this man might be someone special.

“As did I, great minds think alike.” He replied as he noted a rather regal tone about his new acquaintance.

“My name is Eido Bosake of the 7th Division, I have been sent here to ensure the demolition of this dojo. While unfortunate, I would like to give this place a proper burial.” He added before turning to fully face the dark haired man with an ingenious idea.

“Pardon my bluntness, but would you be willing to help me in honoring it with one last friendly duel? I can think of no better way to bring about its end.” He inquired frankly, assuming hopefully that the mans dual zanpakuto was an indication for his shared love of zanjutusu.

The Shinigami standing before him was positively huge. Once he turned and Sachio's eye scanned the mask. His noble training didn't fail him and he remained composed though he was certainly a bit shaken from the mans build and appearance. He wasn't just tall as tree his body was as thick as one too. Yet Sachio meant it when he thought he would be alone in his admiration for the old dojo. This bug masked Shinigami might look odd, but he seemed to share sensibilities that make up a model soul reaper. Respect, honor, and zanjutsu.

He introduced himself so Sachio would do the same.Well met, Bosake. I am Miura Sachio of the 6th Division. He conveniently left out the part about being the third seat. There was no reason to complicate things with status here. He had no good reason to be in the Dojo so he wouldn't make an excuse unless asked.

If you're to destroy this dojo then our duel will help you get started. Sachio paced away from Bosake and created proper space before stopping. The wood creaked beneath his feet until he stopped exactly ten paces away. Sachio released his spiritual pressure with a smile. You may have the first strike.

Zanjutsu was not a discipline the large soul reaper had an innate talent for, but the art form had captivated him as far back as he can remember from his earlier years in South Rukonagi. It was in this very district that he witnessed his first sword fight, albeit a duel between a group of ragtag criminals, not too dissimilar from the ones he had been sent here to dissuade. While their techniques were shoddy at best, it was the only thing that they showed honor and decorum towards. Even though their clothes, and sometimes even their bodies were tattered, their swords were always kept clean and sharpened. The phenomenon of whatever this mystical hold swords had on even the worst of their kind was, it was something the giant soul reaper longed to understand. It was a shame whatever wisdom this dojo held regarding the matter would have to be lost to time, but such were the burdens of his duty.

“How very kind of you. Here is to a pleasant duel.”

He replied with an appreciative nod of his head as his gargantuan thumb pushes up on the guard of his zanpakuto, exposing its blade before being fully drawn in a swift yet practiced motion. Bosake would take the smaller mans measure as he paced away, creating separation for their imminent bout. Flaring his reiatsu ever so slightly, the large shinigami would create six scarab constructs made entirely out of his own holographic reishi that would crawl around the guard and hilt of his zanpakuto in erratic strides. With a quick joust forward Bosake would begin their contest with a pair of downward slashes, each aimed diagonally across the left and right side of Sachio’s midsection in swift succession as if he had created the letter x within the air itself.

Sachio watched as the larger man's head nodded and drew his blade. Intricate reshi constructs shaped like beetles danced around his partners blade. They were strange holographic Sachio pondered whether they were some kind of Kido spell he was unfamiliar with, but the man had said no spell name nor incantation. He could simply be quite skilled in the art.. The man thought, but his opponent was ready. Sachio would draw one of his own blades as to not disrespect his fellow soul reaper. Holding it firmly, but not too tightly in his right hand he awaited the incoming strikes. Sachio wasn't warry of the first attacks aimed at him however. They were average. They looked like a sword strike that would have graduated the academy, but nothing more. Perhaps they were a test? The fact that Sachio could see their trajectory clearly was evidence enough he could evade them. As the man closed in Sachio's Reiatsu honed around his blade as if water rushed around it.

As the strikes came down Sachio leapt over the man's lowered right shoulder. With his left hand, he would draw his second blade attempting to make a cut on the opposite shoulder. With the right hand that already held a blade he would swing backwards attempting a slash across the back. Two swift strikes that were difficult to execute. A fair exchange. Let's go again~ He would say turn to face the opponent with both blades pointed to the ceiling. A smirk slithered across his face. This duel seemed like one he could win, but who knew what the masked soul reaper was hiding? Sachio watched the holographic beetles with a close eye.

As the large shinigami broke the seal on their bout, his heart began to race. While he wasn’t particularly nervous or over excited about the ensuing clash, he did find it exhilarating that he was having a contest inside of a dojo. He had always wondered what it would be like as he had never had the opportunity in his youth, and was far from concerned about winning or losing, for Bosake this was a bucket list moment. He was unsure about Sachio’s sentiments regarding it all, but the air about him seemed practiced and if he had to guess, there was a high probability his scarfed acquaintance had his fair share of formal training.

His pair of cross slashes had missed their mark as his sparring partner seemed to be as lithe as his stature suggested, dodging the sword strikes with relative ease. The stereotype of Sachio’s build was even further accentuated as he tumbled over the masked reapers lowered right shoulder before finally revealing his second blade. Bosake was able to display a bit of his own dexterity as he swiftly pivoted into a timely side step, dodging the left handed slash, proving a bit more light footed than one would expect from someone his size.

It wasn’t until he had dodged that Bosake was able to turn and see the deep blue watery reiatsu that engulfed Sachio’s airborne blades. He had thought there was a sensation of heavy water pressure and a feeling of breaths between drowning before, and this solidified his acute senses as truth and not a mere figment of his imagination.

“BAKUDŌ #32: GYAKU UNMEI…”

He uttered debuting his own reishi. Bosake would encase himself in the holographic amalgams of green, blue, and violet, vibrantly tracing a barrier around his body as it absorbed Sachio’s right handed backslash before discharging spiked tendrils in a flash of recoil. The counter wave of tendrils were indiscriminate, as the other residual spikes that were fired tore through the back wall of the dojo, introducing new beams of light to the interior.

“A fair exchange indeed. Let's continue...”

He replied noting Sachio’s smirk and dual brandished blades. Bosake didn’t know enough about his acquaintance to know the meaning behind his visual displays, but assumed he might be getting serious, starting with a single blade and switching to two was certainly concerning to the masked giant. With a heavy breath Bosake would focus his energy as two of the reishi scarabs on his hilt imbued his blade with a dazzling holographic hue.

With a swift rebounding dash he would bare his zanpakuto overhead, aiming a heavy tomahawk slash down the length of Sachio’s right shoulder. Then, with an outward twist of his wrist, would follow up from the ground with an upward slash aimed up through the 6th division reapers midsection to the length of his left shoulder. It would be interesting to see if his blade would swing true as the large shinigami had never faced off against the rarity of a dual wielder before. There was a chance he might have to adjust considering these special conditions.

As Sachio glided over his opponent a spell was directed at him. He barely noticed his spiritual pressure leaving him and being redirected in the form of an attack. He raised his blade batting the energy away with keen reflexes. He noticed that neither of his own strikes had landed on the large man. Impressive that he was able to dodge that even with the surprise strike... He didn't have much time to think about it as the large man was upon him again. This time Sachio had to guard. He had little space to maneuver before the tomahawk slash was upon him. He raised both of his blades to guard against the mighty strike and direct it away. When the blade aimed his right shoulder passed him, he thought he was successful. 

Sachio was given no quarter from the masked shinigami the blade came back up quickly with a practiced movement that maintained momentum. Sachio rolled along the dusty floor to the left avoiding the second strike completely. That was an impressive attack, that spell caught me off guard almost. Sachio thought for some reason spells had no place in the duel, but the large man had corrected that thought. Sachio redied for his next attack, but then noticed a slight pain in his right shoulder. A beetle seemed to have attached to him delivering a small wound before vanishing. a dot of red appeared against his black shihakusho. Haha so that was some kind of spell interesting interesting!  Sachio eyes leveled with the holes of Boske's masks. I will respond in kind then.


With a wave of his sword lighting reshi seemed to run along his blade before it directed itself at Bosuke. Byakurai! Sachio said as he rushed at his opponent. However, instead of making a simple sword strike. He would charge at his opponent making a slide along the splintery floor. Sachio hopped to get low and that the lightning flash would cover his movement. As he slid he staked one his swords in the ground and spun making a low sweeping attack at Bosuke's ankle with his other blade. At the end of the attack Sachio would have both his swords in hand and be facing Bosuke once again.

The giant was certain that his gyaku unmei would reach its target as he had Sachio flat footed in the air, but the scarfed shinigami’s dexterity shined through once more, batting it away with cat like reflexes. The stray reishi spikes tore through more of the dojo’s roofing as the heavy steps of his follow up charge stressed the loose wooden slats in the floor. His tomahawk slash had been blocked nicely with both of Sachio’s dual swords while his rebounding upward strike missed wide and was easily dodged. The momentum however was enough to fling a single scarab onto Sachio’s right shoulder under the cover of their clash, effectively initiating first blood with a pesky bite before dissolving into the atmosphere. It most certainly wasn’t how Bosake had drawn it up, but he would take what he could get against his elusive partner.

“How kind of you, although thwarting it in mid air was certainly impressive as well.” He replied with acceptance of the compliment while exchanging with one of his own. The brief lull for conversation allowing for the giant to gingerly readjust himself and poise his sword for battle once more.

“Oh…?” The large shinigami muttered after being verbally alerted of the incoming attack, wondering why his new acquaintance would feel the need to telegraph the bolt of lightning reishi before his assault? It mattered not as Bosake proved ready, catching the lightning with his own blade with a precise parry, reflecting the bolt upward and punching a sizable hole in the roof above them. The force of it however did manage to push the behemoth back as his basket woven sandals slid against the filthy slats of warped wood.

With his zanpakuto temporarily charged with the remnants of the prior attack, he tracked the blot of orange in the corner of his eye sliding along the floor. While it was a colorful approach, Bosake managed to stab his sword into the floor near his ankle, effectively blocking the low sweeping attack as well. After a successful defense the masked shinigami would pull his blade from the ground, and as he did so, several of the floor boards would be pulled up and flung towards Sachio. Darting closely being the wooden debris that was hopefully providing at least a modicum of cover, he would hide his blade before performing a pair of heavy thrusted stabs towards each of Sachio’s shoulders.

As Sachio's blade clashed with his opponent's, he clicked his tongue. It was impressive that he was able to block it, but at this point Sachio wasn't sure where this duel would go. They were both evenly matched to this point. Sachio watched his opponent closely as the sword was removed from the wood. Every moment seemed to move slower now. The wood was sent towards him and his opponent was hidden from few. Sachio's eyes shifted left and right as he focused intently on anything he could to avoid this next attack. It was just that Sachio caught a brief glimpse of steel going towards him. With a shift to the left he avoided the thrust narrowly. Now Sachio knew where his opponent was coming from, but his opponent was quick! He couldn't dodge so this time he raised his blade. Bosuke's blade scrapped across his own as he deflected it and the electrical reshi it carried into a nearby wall Leaving a small hole. With his next two attacks Sachio would swing high and low hoping to slash his opponent's face and torso before reversing the slash by rotating his wrist. This swift for fold attack would leave deep slashes across the wall leading to the decaying wood to splinter and fall reveling a few rays of sunlight peaking through.

Despite his exchange of colorful tactics, the floor boards did not prove to be the guise he’d imagined. Even with Sachio’s recovery and reaction time to the surprise debris, he still somehow managed to find his blade and dodge the first strike before blocking away the second one, ridding his zanpakuto of its remnant electrical charge. As the waning electricity hit the wall of the dojo and left a small hole, the integrity of the wall began to slowly compromise. As it cracked, the surrounding deteriorated wood gave way, resulting in a quarter of its surface area crumbling down in bits of succession, framing a nice picture of the view outside like a makeshift a window. More sunlight entered the dojo, gleaming upon Bosake’s mask, creating a half shadow that might have made the insectoid maw look a lot more menacing than intended.

Sachio’s follow up strike first came up high, aimed towards his face with a swiftness he had yet to grow accustomed to. Still, by the grace of his own training, the giant was able to draw his zanpakuto around to block, their blade edges meeting at a perpendicular angle. The force behind the initial strike was far stronger than any of the others Sachio had showcased before, causing the giant to tighten his grip for good measure behind the critical force swing. The follow up strike that hinted low towards his torso met the same fate, albeit not as heavy as the first, was parried all the same as Bosake twirled the grip of his zanpakuto, pointing the blade towards the ground and across his midsection to recoil the slash. With a sly reverse grip he would then attempt to return the favor, aiming a parallel slash towards the bridge of Sachio’s nose before craftily dropping the sword in his off hand to slash at his abdomen from the opposite direction.

Sachio was impressed Bosuke could guard his strikes he'd felt good about the first attack especially. It was clear to him that when it came to combat that were equals wining this duel would likely be an exercise in luck.

As their blades met, Sachio realized that he had to adjust his grip to avoid injure to his own hand. He was not only having to guard against Bosuke's attacks, but also his own. With the knowledge that meeting Bosuke's guard was doing more harm to him then his strikes could do to Bosuke Sachio took a moment to rethink his tactics, and purpose. Bosuke's reverse grip slash was ducked under as Sachio took a breather to center himself. The next strike was crafty he utilized both his hands inorder to change the direction and slash at him lower. A take on his own attack striking low and high luckily Sachio's eyes were sharp. He caught the movement and guarded the slash by inverting his blade.

Sachio jumped up slightly allowing the force of Bosuke's strike to carry him away from the giant. As Sachio slide across the floor the wood was torn away leaving debris in his wake.

hmm, it seems that in Zanjutsu we're evenly matched. I will refocus my attacks elsewhere. Sachio announced with a smile. One of his blades was planted in the exposed earth below him as he snapped his fingers. The spell kare lit a small fire next to Bosuke's feet. The goal of this fight was to honor the dojo, but also destroy it. The flames would quicken the pace of this duel, and perhaps inhibit Bosuke's technique. Sachio would see if Bosuke would react to the spell or be caught in it's radius.

The reverse grip slash missed wide, enabling Sachio to duck beneath it with relative ease. In all truth it served as a feint to setup up for the off hand catch and slash across the abdomen. He had figured a direct attack regardless of how clever had very little chance of eluding the scarfed shinigami’s defenses to this point, and that any hope of his blade reaching him had to be setup strategically. Alas, his truly intended strike was thwarted by yet another timely parry, performed by a sly inversion of one his two zanpakuto.

“I would agree, it seems we are indeed dead even.” He replied, relieved that Sachio had noticed it too. To this point it had been like fighting against an equal yet opposite reflection, or like chasing ones own shadow. Despite the speed, creativity, and guise of their zanjutsu techniques, it always seemed to end up in a stalemate. While in any other circumstance it would have been a frustrating realization, finding an ally that was evenly yoked heralded potential for a healthy rivalry if nothing else.

With the announcement of an adjustment and a snap of his fingers, the fire that Sachio had conjured near his feet was easy to read. With a quick breath and a reishi concentrated stomp of his large foot, Bosake would redirect the flames outward, causing the floorboards around them to slowly kindle into a shoddy square of fire, brightly outlining their arena. As he did so, he cast a wave of fire of his own that would travel along the floor in a swift b-line towards Sachio, aimed back towards his own feet looking to return the favor. Following up behind the line of fire, Bosake would try again, looking to catch Sachio across the chest with a spinning diagonal slash. The giants swift pirouette defying his stature and revealing a bit more of his own light footed dexterity.

“I’m afraid kidō is a strength of mine as well…”

The fire slowly took the floor boards, but not the man in the mask. With a stomp, he used his weight to redirect the flames. A fair play Sachio thought. His true intentions where to damage the structure more. Their duel had been destructive but only minorly so thus far. Sachio wanted to change that, and it seemed like the giant was following his lead.

Bosuke's fire was much more directed than Sachio's had been more direct in the way it attacked him. Sachio leapt expecting to avoid it, but he was too slow. The flames gripped his foot scorching him with pain. This pain would have distracted a lesser soul reaper, but Sachio's senses aided him again. With a swift spin in mid air he was able to detect and avoid Bosuke's follow up slice. He was only a little suprised that the giant was also skilled at Kido. It seemed his foundations were rock solid in all areas. Bosuke was swift, as well as sturdy. Sachio had no time to marvel his opponent. He drew deep within no longer limiting his spiritual output. Sachio mumbled an incantation layered upon itself increasing the density of lightning reshi that flowed around him. The strength of his next attack was higher than the first byakurai Sachio had launched, but the main the difference was how focused and filled the twin beams that arced from his twin blades towards Bosuke were. These filled with intent to connect. This duel had changed into a display of all of the Shinigami arts the two soul reapers could muster.

The flames grew ever higher creeping up the walls of the dojo and slowly taking the roof.

As the dojo began to burn, the smell of fire and light veils of smoke became prevalent, making the parameters of their spar a bit more difficult. For any average soul reaper, fighting creatively within a confined space while also avoiding the fire would have been incredibly difficult. However, it seemed both he and Sachio were trained well enough to hardly notice, as it was highly unlikely the flames by themselves could harm or even slow down their progress. The only chance that had of happening would be of an intentional assault, much to the likes of the giant soul reapers counter Kare, whose flames managed to bite at his partners heel.

It seemed this time his pirouette slash would connect with Sachio slightly burned and airborne, but again, history repeated itself. The smaller shinigami had dodged it with a spin of his own. Perhaps after their bout he would ask how one could become so adept at dodging in mid-air. Maybe it had something do with his lithe frame? Perhaps it was a technique altogether? His inquiry would have to wait as his ears picked up on the slight mumble of an incantation, the words were unclear, but a ranged counter attack seemed apparent.

The twin beams of electricity arched from Sachio’s zanpakuto with the swiftness of twin vipers. It seemed the angle and rotation from his airborne dodge had thrown off the accuracy of the first bolt, missing the giant by just a few inches. The other bolt was dead on target, but was met by a cluster of his scarabs, forming a shield with their shells to protect the giant from harm before dispersing back into pure resihi. Bosake would then use the waning electrical charge in the air to add a stunning property to another counter Kare aimed towards Sachio’s leg. As he did so, he would follow up again, charging behind his spell with an overhead tomahawk slash aimed down through Sachio’s right shoulder.
